Ky. mother sues railroad over daughter's death

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (AP) - The mother of a central Kentucky teenager killed last year as she drove across a railroad crossing has filed a wrongful death suit against the owner of the tracks.

Phillita Jill Ammons filed the complaint Tuesday in Mercer County Circuit Court against Norfolk Southern and an unnamed company that may have performed maintenance along the tracks.

Ammons' daughter, 19-year-old Sophia ammons, died Oct. 15 after a train struck the front end of her truck as it entered the crossing. Ammons was thrown from the vehicle and died.

The Advocate-Messenger reported that Phillita Jill Ammons is seeking unspecified damages. She alleges that the train failed to sound its whistle in a timely manner and that the tracks were not properly maintained.

Norfolk Southern did not immediately respond to the lawsuit.
