Accused homeowner's association shooter pleads not guilty

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The Louisville man accused of shooting two of his neighbors at a homeowners' association meeting has pleaded not guilty to two murder charges and seven counts of wanton endangerment.

Mahmoud Yousef Hindi is being held without bond. The 55-year-old says he has no money and needs a public defender.

Authorities say Hindi had longstanding disputes with neighbors and the homeowners' association over a fence and driveway he put in his front yard in an eastern Louisville suburb.

Police say Hindi shot 73-year-old David Merritt and 69-year-old Marvin Fisher at the Sept. 6 meeting at a nearby church. Merritt was shot in the head and died at the scene. Fisher died a few days later.

Prosecutors are considering seeking the death penalty for Hindi, a Jordanian-trained doctor whose medical license had expired.
