Soldier Who Lost Arm Awarded For Saving 2 Lives

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - A Fort Campbell soldier who saved two lives after losing his arm in Iraq has received two medals for his efforts.

Staff Sgt. James "Ross" Graydon has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Valor and the Meritorious Service Medal, one of the higher service decorations.

Army officials say Graydon was performing route clearance maneuvers in Sadr City in July 2006 when an improvised explosive device detonated next to his vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was killed, and three others were wounded. Graydon lost his arm in the explosion but managed to direct first aid given to other wounded soldiers until help arrived.

Graydon is assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division based at the post on the Tennessee-Kentucky border.
