Police Shoot Suspect In Domestic Violence Call

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY -- Kentucky State Police are investigating a late Saturday night Taylor County shooting incident in which a suspect in a domestic violence call was shot by local police after he reportedly refused to put down a handgun and fired it at the officers.

The incident occured about 11:30 p.m. at 506 Woodlawn Avenue in Campbellsville. A KSP news release says the Campbellsville Police Department received a 911 call in reference to a domestic altercation involving weapons.

Police say when the officers arrived they encountered 22-year old Adam Powell armed with a hand gun. They say Powell confronted officers with the gun and officers ordered him to drop the weapon.

Powell reportedly then pointed and fired his weapon at the officers. One of the officers returned fire, striking Powell twice. The news release does not identify the officer who reportedly "returned fire."

Powell was taken by ambulance to Taylor Regional Hospital where he underwent surgery for his wounds. He was later transferred to the University of Louisville Hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition early Sunday

The shooting is being investigated by Detective B. J. Burton and Detective Kevin Hunt of the Kentucky State Police.
