Insanity plea filed in Ohio school shooting case

CHARDON, Ohio (AP) - The defense for an Ohio teenager charged in a school shooting rampage that left three students dead has filed an insanity plea on his behalf.

The one-sentence filing Monday on behalf of 18-year-old suspect T.J. Lane had been expected and didn't elaborate on the insanity issue.

Lane's attorneys have said he suffers from hallucinations, psychosis and fantasies.

Attorneys filed the not guilty by reason of insanity plea in Geauga County, east of Cleveland.

Lane is being tried as an adult and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted of the shootings Feb. 27 in the Chardon High School cafeteria.

The prosecutor did not immediately return phone and email messages Monday seeking comment on the insanity plea.
