Lunsford Gives Self $470K, Allows Some Foes Extra Fundraising

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Bruce Lunsford donated $470,000 to his U.S. Senate campaign last week in a move that pushed his self-funding over the $1 million mark.

The donation tripped the so-called millionaire's amendment, allowing some of his opponents in the Democratic primary to accept up to three times the maximum contribution from each donor.

But, the other wealthy candidate in the Democratic primary, Greg Fischer, won't benefit from the move.

Fischer has contributed $510,000 to his own campaign because the differential between Lunsford's and his contribution is only $505,000.

Federal law also doesn't allow Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, who had $7.3 million on hand at the end of 2007, to go back and ask donors to contribute more.
