Coach Cal, UK basketball team present $1 million check for storm relief

NEW YORK (WKYT) - Before Friday night's game against Maryland at the Barclays Center, Coach John Calipari and the UK basketball team had a gift for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

They presented a $1 million check during a ceremony at half-court.

The money was raised during the Big Blue Nation Cares telethon, which aired Wednesday night on WKYT.

"I told them we're not doing this to rebuild Queens or Staten Island. You're keeping people alive, feeding them, housing them giving them shelter, giving them clothes, giving them medicine, water, that's what you're doing. And that's all we we're trying to do," Calipari said he told his players.

Papa John's and Dick Vitale were among those who made donations.

Many UK basketball players answered phones during the telethon, and Coach Cal was a host.
