An earthquake rocked the region early Friday morning.

There are no reports of significant damage or injuries after a moderate 5.2 earthquake rocked southern Illinois. The quake was centered near the town of New Salem, near Evansville, Indiana. However it could be felt all the way here in the Bluegrass and even as far south as Memphis.

It was sudden awakening for many across the region as the quake shook homes at 5:37 this morning.

State disaster and emergency officials are receiving scattered reports of small damage across western Kentucky and in Louisville.

According to Buddy Rogers with Kentucky Emergency Management, bricks came down from the facade of an older building in Downtown Louisville and a house in Logan County had three rooms where drywall cracked. Rogers also says bridges in Western Kentucky have been looked at and all are okay.

WHAS radio reported a water main break in Louisville may also be tremor related.

At this time, we do know that a 5.2 magnitude earthquake centered in Illinois hit at 04:36:57 AM Central, according to the United States Geological Survey Website.

AP STORY

Ky. residents jolted by Ill. quake

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An earthquake shook people awake across wide portions of Kentucky early Friday, prompting calls to authorities but causing little damage and no reported injuries.

The 5.2-magnitude temblor struck just before 4:37 a.m. (CST) and was centered six miles from West Salem, Ill., and 66 miles from Evansville, Ind. It was felt across a number of states.

Beverly Lee said her area "shook like crazy" in the Reed community in Henderson County but the quake caused no damage to her mobile home.

"It was just like someone was standing outside shaking that trailer," she said by phone from western Kentucky. "It shook my daughter right out of bed."

Chuck Wolfe, a state Transportation Cabinet spokesman, said the agency had dispatched inspectors to check out bridges, especially in areas closest to the quake's epicenter, out of an "abundance of caution." He said he had received no reports of damage to roads or bridges.

Wes Royse, a sales representative at WCLU radio station in Glasgow in south-central Kentucky, said the quake lasted as long as 30 seconds and shook him awake.

"It started out with a real fine shake, and then it got a little bit harder," he said.

In Louisville, the quake caused a bricks to fall off part of a building near downtown, and television video showed bricks strewn in the street and workers using equipment to remove them.

Chad Carlton, a spokesman for Mayor Jerry Abramson, said there were no reports of injuries.

Bill Stephens, news director at WSON-AM in Henderson, said he heard a rumbling when the quake struck, but said he had seen no damage to his home. He said his station received numerous calls from startled residents.

"There's a lot of fright with this one because of how strong it was and the time of day," he said.

Authorities across Kentucky also were inundated with calls.

Kentucky State Police dispatcher Natalie Alsip at the post in Henderson, just across the Ohio River from Evansville, said telephone calls poured in to the post and one man reported cracked plaster at his home.

Dispatcher Katrina Ellington at the state police post in Mayfield said there were many phone calls from western Kentucky locations, but no indication of injury or serious damage.

In far western Kentucky, no damage occurred at a uranium enrichment plant and operations continued as normal, said Elizabeth Stuckle, a spokeswoman for the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

I was asleep and awoke to feel shaking undWerneath my bed. At first I thought it was my furnace, but then realized it wasn't on. My husband was asleep, but I said out loud, "What in the world was that?" I thought to myself it felt like an earthquake tremor. The foundation of my house was shaking. I later found out about the earthquake.

Holy cow it was a strong one. Shook my old trailer to pieces. My 20 cats were runnin round scared as a little girl in her first haunted house. Ain't never felt nuthin like that. A picture of my granny fell off the wall and to top it off, my dentures fell out. Still makes me scared just thinkin bout it.

DID YOU FEEL IT? REPORT IT HERE! You can help provide information about the extent of shaking and damage for earthquakes in the United States, and you may provide specific details about how your area may respond to future earthquakes. Your ZIP code is REQUIRED! All other identifiers (name, e-mail, phone, and location) are optional, but we need your ZIP code to locate the intensity in your area. The other data may be useful for more accurate location of felt areas. CLICK HERE TO FILE YOUR REPORT http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/STORE/X2008qza6/ciim_form.html

I was awakened around 5 something. I felt my house shaking. I raised up in bed and thought at first that it was a storm, but it just felt different. And I realized, it was an earthquake. I looked outside to see if I could see the horses running or see if any of the animals were acting strange. It was too dark to notice anything. I just sat there in my bed, finally it was over, and I said Wow, that was an earthquake, surely that was an earthquake! I fell back a sleep, and when I got to school, one of the students in the prayer group mentioned the people in Indiana and the earthquake, that is when I said, "I knew it, I knew it was an earthquake" I didn't hear anyone mention it at school all day,so I just wonder if I was one of the few who experienced it. Thank you God for telling us again, that these things were going to come to pass before you come again. Every eye shall see and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

I live in the circle of a court in the Lansdowne School area that backs up to New Circle Rd. We hear a lot of traffic noise and sometimes the big trucks make our windows rattle a little. But this morning at 5:37AM, it was no truck rattling our windows. I was awakened by the same vibrations and sounds that I recalled feeling and hearing back on July 27, 1980. I immediately KNEW what it was. They say that tornadoes have a distinct sound and ambiance all their own, and I know from experience that earthquakes do as well. I laid in bed, frozen, startled and scared, taking in what I was hearing and feeling, concentrating on the vibrations and listening to the windows rattling, the earth rumbling and things outside moving. It must have awakened me just a few seconds after it started because it lasted at least 30 seconds after I woke up. When it was over, I looked at my clock and it said 5:38AM. No one else in the house felt it and if they did, they never said anything. lol

did it happen twice? could've sworn i felt it later today too. this morn i thought my dog was under the bed scratching raised up to run him out & realized it wasn't him becuz he was beside the bed whining. thats when i realized my bed was still shaking. i knew it was a quake. picked up the frightened pooch and snuggled us back to sleep. later i was laying on the grass playing with my dogs when i thought i felt another tremor. i remember one as a teen and as a young girl. the one when i was young was a lot stronger.

I was lying in bed almost asleep when my bed started shaking. The door to our bath started shaking. I yelled at my husband who was in the other room getting ready for work. I told him we just had a earthquake. He also noticed the door rattling. I had him to look at the time it was 5:38. I waited about 15 minutes then turned on 27 news first and seen I was correct.

I had just got off the computer to feed my animals and noticed they were all really restless. I didn't really notice the tremors when they happened because our heater makes a horrible shake and rattle when it kicks on so, I attributed the quake shock to that! I didn't find out about what it really was until my husband called me on his way to work after hearing about it on the radio news!

I woke up at 5:37 when my bed starting shaking. My husband woke up a few seconds later and I told him we were having an earth quake. We could hear the rumble and our house popping and cracking. My son and daughter both woke up also. My son's bedroom is just above our's and his bathroom door openned and hit the wall and there are two small cracks in the drywall in his closet that were not there before. My daughter's room is on the other end of the house but there were no cracks in her bedroom or bathroom. I think it was in the 70's when we had an earth quake before and I felt it also. This was a first for the kids. Hope this is all there is.

At about 5:40 A.M. I was awaken by my bed shaking and I realized my hold home was ahaking. My windows didn't make any noise but my house did. It sounded like nails being pried from wood. I said we've had an earthquake or some coal mine has put off a blast and a half. When I got up for the day WYMT was reporting about the earthquake. My niece said they felt it a Meta, KY.

we were all sound asleep in our beds, when i imagined that i was having a wicked REM dream, but the bed was shaking and knocking against the hardwood floors so hard, that we were awakened. we stayed quiet and listened for evidence of the cause, but felt like we had probably just experienced an earthquake. later, when we again felt the house vibrating from an aftershock, the local tv news was already confirming the magnitude and range, and the damage reports were coming in. really makes you feel uneasy and apprehensive. living in far western kentucky, we are predicted to experience "the big one." reelfoot lake in tennessee was created by an earthquake. events like today put perspective on our lives. the earth is just fascinating--let us work to keep her green. god bless america.

I sure felt the tremers this morning. Around about 5:40. We live in a trailor and believe me it did do some shaking . Our wood stove started rattling and then the rest of the house proceeded. I would say 45 seconds to a min. I asked my daughter when she got up for school if she felt it she said no. It has been many years since i have felt a earth quake and my daughter has never experienced it and she slept through it.

I was awakened by the earthquake this morning,I was in bed and felt the vibrations for a few seconds. At that time I was unsure of what was happening. I live near a railroad track and I was afraid that a train had derailed or collided with a vehicle or another train. I laid and listened for sometime never hearing or feeling anyhting else. I begin to think that maybe it was loud thunder.I asked my husband when he was getting ready for work and he neither heard nor felt anything. I was not surprised when I finally heard and read on the news today about the quake. My brother called from Prestonsburg, KY and he also felt the vibrations in his home there. I hope there have been no injuries.

Posted by: Wanda Location: Thousandsticks/Hyden Ky on Apr 18, 2008 at 11:58 AM
I live in the Thousandsticks area of Leslie County. This morning I was awakened by my mobile home shaking. I thought at first it was the wind, then I thought there wasn't any wind in our forcast for that night. The things in my room was shaking on the wall. It seemed like it lasted for minutes but was probabuly seconds more likely. I also was hearing a sound, a roaring sound. ??? I don't know what that was! As far as I can tell there is no damage in or around my house. I felt the same shaking and things moving once before here back in the early 70's. I am glad you had this on your sight this morning, to let me know I wasn't the only one that felt the quake, and let me know I wasn't nuts!!!..I just goes to show,we may be somewhat likely with tornados due to the mountians but we can't run from a quake.Thank goodness! I hope this is the last time it happens but I know that could only be a sample of what might be yet to come.Did anyone KNOW this was going to accure? Sure would h .

I could here the interior doors rattling in the bedrooms on the other side of the house. I asked my wife what is this and she replied, " That's the cat running and playing", I said, " That's one huge cat to shake the whole house".

My wife was already up, and was taken off guard when items on the walls of our home started rattling and shaking. I don't know the exact amount of time that we felt the tremors, but it would be a good estimate of 45 seconds to a minute. Needless to say, we didn't need the alarm clock this morning. No damage here, but the 'quake was big enough to wake me up. I watched a documentary that said the next earthquake on this particular fault line could be catastrophic, so I'm glad it was only 5.2.

Nice way to wake up this morning eh? The bed was shaking (which is rare, LOL) the windows and pictures on the wall were vibrating, but the sound was really eerie. We had the windows open and I asked hubby if a tornado was coming. Woke me up from a dead sleep. Thanks to the remote and 27 news, I got my update without actually having to get out of bed :)

We felt the quake at 5:36 AM est. The shaking lasted about 5 seconds. I first thought we were having a wind storm or maybe the washer was running out of balance (wasn't on at that hour!) My wife and son came running out of their bedrooms wanting to know what the shaking was. Then my mother called to see if we were ok. (She's 86). no damage to report.

We were in the first block of news at 5:30 am ... when I noticed some shaking and rattling. It went on for close to minute and I thought there was something going on with the dumpsters outside... But,within minutes, the phones were ringing in the newsroom and e-mails were flowing in folks who'd experienced the quake all around our viewing area. Then we got really busy tracking down the details! We're glad you folks were watching and responded with info as we all sorted out the facts together.

After returning to bed my daughter, who sleeps on a mattress on the floor, yelled to me, "I think we are having an earth quake!" The walls popped some and the windows rattled, but nothing fell inside the house. We are located 45 miles south of Lexington, KY.
