Earth Day Celebrated In Central KY

Making our environment a better, cleaner place to live, that's what millions around the world are doing Monday as we observe Earth Day.

Many activities are taking place right here in the bluegrass.

At the Coca-Cola plant on Leestown road, officials held a groundbreaking for a new rain garden. It is designed to catch the runoff from parking lots. There are plans for 210 similar rain gardens to be put in around the city of Lexington before the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

Workers at Kentucky Utilities celebrated Earth Day by handing out 15,000 red bud seedlings to people who stopped by.

Earth Day was founded by peace activist John McConnell back in 1969. He hoped it would inspire awareness of and appreciation for the environment.
