Police have now identified a suspect they say fired shots at the Burgin police chief.

Police say they're looking for Francisco Gutierrez. They think he may be headed for Tennessee.

The incident started on Kennedy Bridge Road in Mercer County late Tuesday night.

Police say Chief Jim Caldwell pulled over a Chevy pickup truck and quickly noticed the driver was armed. Police say when Caldwell asked the man to get out of the truck, he put the pedal to the metal and tried to get away, leading Caldwell on a chase.

Dispatch tapes just released, revealed what happened next.

"He does have a pistol, he has a weapon in his possession," said Chief Caldwell.

The driver then crashed into a fence along Kentucky 52.

"Shots fired," Caldwell told dispatch.

When the driver got out of the truck, police say he fired one shot at Caldwell. Caldwell fired back and the suspect ran into a field. Caldwell says a total of eight shots were fired.

No one was hurt.

Police searched the field, but found no one.

Kentucky State Police Officers have interviewed Caldwell about the incident.
