Those found guilty of abusing animals in Kentucky will now face some tougher penalties.

Governor Beshear signed Romeo's Law into law during a ceremony in Frankfort Monday afternoon.

The bill is named after a Pulaski County dog, whose abuse was caught on tape.

Romeo was on hand for today's signing.

Under the law, dog or cat torture will now be considered a felony, instead of a misdemeanor.

Supporters of the law say the public helped get it passed quickly.

"It's been overwhelming, the support we have seen across the state," Courtney Girdler from the Pulaski County Humane Society said. "And it's just wonderful that people have come out and let their voice be heard for those who can't speak for themselves."

Anyone convicted under Romeo's Law could face up to 5 years in prison.

My nephew has a beautiful dog and one of his neighbors shot the dog inbetween the eyes with a 38 and walked off and left the dog to suffer. The dog was laying along my nephews fence line when he was shot. My niece heard the shot and came out and they took the dog to the hospital. So far the Dr. put the eye back in his head and the dog is home. So far the police nor anyone has done anything to the neighbor for coming up there and doing this. Who do they call to get this sicko locked up for doing this? Thanks Have a wonderful day

To Bart---we rescued a dog that had been tied to a tree with a cable. the cable was imbedded in the dog's neck---Bottom line, the dog's neck had grown, the cable could not expand, so it had no place to go than to cut into the dog's neck (about 3") ---the cable had cut into the vocal cords---we have also rescued dogs with every rib showing--others living in cages so small they could barely turn around, no food, water or shelter---puppies in an open top cage,in the middle of a winter sleet storm, eating their dead litter mate because there was no food or water ----these are some of the cases of animal abuse Romeo' Law will address.

Thank God we finally have a law to protect the innocent animals. Bart,I hope you are not an animal abuser; your comments make me uneasy.
