Those found guilty of abusing animals in Kentucky will now face some tougher penalties.

Governor Beshear signed Romeo's Law into law during a ceremony in Frankfort Monday afternoon.

The bill is named after a Pulaski County dog, whose abuse was caught on tape.

Romeo was on hand for today's signing.

Under the law, dog or cat torture will now be considered a felony, instead of a misdemeanor.

Supporters of the law say the public helped get it passed quickly.

"It's been overwhelming, the support we have seen across the state," Courtney Girdler from the Pulaski County Humane Society said. "And it's just wonderful that people have come out and let their voice be heard for those who can't speak for themselves."

Anyone convicted under Romeo's Law could face up to 5 years in prison.

Thank God we finally have a law to protect the innocent animals. Bart,I hope you are not an animal abuser; your comments make me uneasy.

... and how does this law define torture, Ashley? The iron maiden? NO! When people start being charged under this law for ridiculous things, I will be here to laugh at and mock you! Meanwhile you will be rightfully hiding your head in shame.

To Bart: (edited) This law applies ONLY to the torture of dogs and cats. It has nothing to do with a car accident in which you accidentally hit an animal, or with training methods, or with trying to prevent an animal from destroying your property. It doesn't even deal with run of the mill abuse or neglect... This law deals only with TORTURE. And the fact of the matter is, anyone who tortures a dog or cat, should go to jail. Period. Thank goodness this bill is finally law.

It's about time..those of us who care for our pets the way we're supposed to, are very appreciative.

This is great, but is it only dog and cat abuse? What about starving abused horses?

Better make sure that you crash your car into a tree rather than hit a dog in the road. Also, be careful with that rolled up newspaper when your dog messes the floor. Dogs and cats have rights now. You are now not allowed to do anything to a dog or cat that gets on your property and destroys things. They gots them some rights!
