Couple Dead After Nursing Home Shooting

Police in northern Kentucky say an 85 year old man shot and killed his wife in her nursing home room, then fatally shot himself.

Carrolton Police are calling it a murder-suicide saying the husband, Harry Hopperton, 85, shot his wife, Myla Hopperton, 83, at the Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation center in Carroll County before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m.

Carrollton police say Myla Hopperton was pronounced dead at the scene. Harry Hopperton was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about three hours after the shooting.

Police say Hopperton entered his wife's room and used a small-caliber handgun to shoot her in the head before shooting himself in the head.

"Our staff heard two gunshots and raced to Mylas room," said Jim Alexander, the nursing home President.

Police found a suicide note in the room, they say Harry Hopperton drafted it and Myla Hopperton signed it. Myla had been a resident at the home for nine-months. Police say she was bed ridden but not terminally ill.

"This is a small town, things like this just don't happen, we will have to take this one day at a time," said Tim Gividen, with Carrolton Police.

The nursing home says there is nothing they could of done to prepare or prevent for something like this to happen. They have made grief counselors availabe for staff and residents.

The couple is from Warsaw, KY. They are survived by one son.
