Gas Prices Jump To $3.75 In Lexington Save Email Print
Posted: 11:26 AM May 7, 2008
Last Updated: 9:18 AM May 8, 2008

A | A | A

Drivers in Lexington are paying more than ever for a gallon of gas.

The price for unleaded jumped up to $3.75 on Wednesday morning. That's a new record for Lexington.

The price hike comes on the heels of another record setting price for crude oil, at $123 a barrel. Around this time last year, a barrel of oil was about $62 a barrel.

Many experts say they expect gas prices to hit the four dollar mark by this summer.

What the h*** are we going to do? Gasoline is outrageous. About a year ago I foolishly traded my almost paid off car for a truck. Now gas is so expensive that with full coverage insurance and truck payment and gas money, its sucking down around $400.00 a MONTH! I barely make that every two weeks. It keeps on getting much higher and you'll have to stay home and guard your gasoline with a gun! Something has to give and I think the answer lays with getting rid of what we have got in Washington. Wish there was a way to impeach the thief-in-chief and trigger happy veep. I'm tired of people getting screwed over. People are having to sell off prized heirlooms just to put food on the table and gas in the vehicle. Its time for a difference. Its time for a change. Its time for Barack Obama to be president.

Yes, Lewis, something to think about is exactly what you need. The Democrats did not take control of the "House & Senate." The Senate is even. That being the case, how can controlling the House but not the Senate and the White House bring about such a change? The financial woes of this country are caused by factors that are far outside the provience of this Congress. This includes investment decisions, credit expansions, overseas outsourcing, and other global events such as the war in Iraq. The long and the short of it is that the US Dollar doesn't hold the sway that it once did. The President or Congress cannot control the price of gas. All they can do is appeal to OPEC to up production, which OPEC refuses to do. Your claim is jujst an example of post hoc ergo propter hoc.

The price of gas when the Democrats took control of House & Senate 11/7/2006..2.36 per gallon. Now who really is to blame for 3.75 per gallon. Just something to think about...

Posted by: brian Location: woodford on May 9, 2008 at 07:50 PM
Why is it that our country feels a need to purchase expensive oil from overseas when there is an abundance of it in our own country? If we would harvest our own oil for a while maybe we could force the price of crude oil per barrel down and possibly the cost of feul also! And at the same time possibly stabilize our economy and boost the value of the "American Dollar".

vote democrate, bring the war to our yards.

Yea vote Obama that way he can tax oil companys out of business and then the gas will go up hey the gas was not this high till the kook dems won the house and senate its the congress thats doing nothing get rid of liberalism that would do the country good.

Anwar and off-shore oil would help now if they had been allowed 10 years ago. Put the blame where it should be - on a group of liberal congresspersons and interest groups who want to force us into a life-style that THEY think WE should have. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

If you want gas prices to go down, and this country to be back the way it used to be before Bush ruined it, vote Obama. He's our only hope.

No what we need is to pump oil and build refineries and get rid of all these grades and vote the idiots thats in the house and senate for not having a energy plan this is no excuse we are a growing country we need oil and there is plenty if the government will get out of the way. and all you Stalanist quit blaming the Companys your starting to sound like the old USSR. Wake up America this is foolish Washington is ignorant and doing nothing and laughing at you.

I am not a LOSER for one thing.THE SOLIDERS are in Iraq for no reason, losing their lives everyday. Name one reason they are over there. It's all over OIL. #1 wants what OIL they have in Iraq. That's why those boys are losing their lives, over oil. Hello, you need to wake up yourself and leave your drugs alone

Posted by: Working Poor Location: Winchester on May 8, 2008 at 04:47 PM
Hey Bart, you say if I can't afford the gas to get to work, I should move closer to my work place-Are you going to pay off my existing mortgage, buy my house, and help me find a cheaper house close to work? Not as easily done as said there, buddy. If it were that easy, to just sell my house and move, don't you think the entire NATION would have thougt of that? Or how about all employers firing their workers that live outside their township, and hiring all those that live in their township that were displaced by other employers? Get real!! Most of us have cut back on everything else that you mentioned. Problem is, the more we are cutting back, the more they seem to be raising the prices on gas and groceries. How about NO ONE in America votes in the Presidential election. Not even our so-called "super delegates". Or how about we all pencil in ourselves-Now there's a concept-A country for the people, actually RAN by the people....Boston Tea anyone?????

Posted by: Fed up Location: KY on May 8, 2008 at 04:04 PM
Dear Very Concerned Citizen, Why don't you leave this country and see how really bad it is here!!! Blame the President....all losers that don't know who to blame ....blame him! I am guessing you were NOT in the military because if you were you would have more pride in our country and respect our President! We don't always have to agree with things...that is just how life is...grow up!

Posted by: Sheila Location: Richmond on May 8, 2008 at 03:13 PM
Do you even notice that they warn us in advance about gas prices going up so we all can run out and purchase more gas before the gas goes up again and what are we saving by doing this a few dollars? These oil companies are making a fortune off of us by scaring us with rising gas prices. I get gas as I need it regardless of the price. I plan ahead for all my errands and do as many as I can on one trip out instead of running back and forth to town. I wish people would quit panicking and realize the gas is high no matter what the price is and we will pay for it no matter what.

Posted by: mj Location: lex on May 8, 2008 at 02:00 PM
No sense crying about something we can't fix. In England they pay 2-3 times as much per gallon and think we are very spoiled here in the U.S. I feel sorry for truckers who are paying $1200 to fill up.

Posted by: resident Location: ky on May 8, 2008 at 12:23 PM
all you cry babies, complain about the price of a gallon of gasoline then run out and fill up, then run that tank full out in 2 days then fill up again, ever think that we the people are at fault, it's the demand, i drive to work, any stops will be made on the way home. only going back out in case of emergency. if you have driving age teenagers then you are really adding to the problem if you do not control their running around!

How in the world are we suppose to raise kids, keep them feed, and fuel up for work? I alread work 2 jobs plus my husband has a full time job and it's patheic when you spend part of your earnings for fuel. I agree that when Bill Clinton was president life was easier, if only he had kept his pants up and Monica away......I feel that it is time for our soliders to come home, too many lives have been lost already, and let's worry about our country and citizens here at home...............Some of our children are starving right here at home, if it weren't for school meals some kids might not eat period............wise up America vote for our country

Well said, DR & Skyhawk-Nothing will ever change in Washington. Does anyone agree with me that career politicians are ruining this nation, and we desperately need term limits? Some of these jokers have been in office so long, they think they can't be fired! They're convinced they are smarter us and they know better than we do, what's best for us. I'm a Kentucky republican who is ready for someone to replace McConnell & Rogers. They've had their time, done some good things- but its time for them to go. And Ted Kennedy- does anyone else think he's been in Washington too long? Two terms is enough for the president, and we need a two term limit for Senators & Reps on both the state and national levels. Lets start talking out loud about firing some of these guys, and see if that gets their attention. Just remember, you can't just talk about it with you buddies, you have to contact the politician! The internet will give you contact info-tell them what you think about gas prices & term limits!

I hate to say it, but all you can do is go to work and then go straight home. Do all of your errands in between work and home. STOP the unnecessary running all over the place when all you have to do is think ahead a little. These times are going to affect everyone, even the children, unfortunately. You may have to cut out some of their activities to save on fuel costs. It's a hard thing to accept, but eventually morale can only get so low before some serious actions will be taken. Plan out your day, it's all about supply and demand. The demand has to go WAY down. Just a little shot of reality people.

Where are our elected officials during this outrage oh yea I forgot they are getting rich along with the oil companies.it behooves me that during an election year they want us to vote to put and keep them in office but what are they really doing for us.Again those running for office say the same things that those already in office told us when they were running.I thought America was supposed to be the most powerful nation in the world but looks as if these foreign nations are going to bring us to our knees because of oil and gas and no one in office cares because we have to pay for their salaries while in office and also after their terms are up so they know they are set for the remainder of their lifes.Terriorists know they don't have to make anymore strikes in America because we will destroy America ourselves so they set back and wait and then they will reap the spoils. Is there anyone out there with the intestinal fortitude that will step up and do something about this?

Posted by: skyhawk Location: Lexington on May 8, 2008 at 06:19 AM
Fred, i agree with your statement but just take a look at how much Exxon spent last year of their record profits on new exploration. Of their 40 BILLION dollar profit only 100 million went to new exploration. Some are saying we have not built a new refinery since the 70's. Since when is it the tax payers responsability to build them a new refinery? We don't build factories for Ford, GE etc. The oil companies are closing refineries the have going now and this is to drive up the prices even more. Hell of a plan when you are the only game in town. The biggest problem is that the Feds don't regulate the oil companies so they are free to do what they want. The electric industry is regulated, the dairy industry is regulated so on and so forth. So why is the oil industry not held to these same standards? Could it be that the idiots we put in Washington are in their hip pockets? No, that couldn't be it! Heck they were elected to help us out, they would never do something for their own benefit.

Posted by: Desi Location: Richmond on May 8, 2008 at 01:13 AM
Sadly an up in gas prices = an up in everything else. I am starting to really worry about our economy. I have never seen things like this. We can barely afford to get to work and back. People are loosing their homes. I'm sure that thousands upon thousands of people are starving to death right here in our country! And our 'glorious' President is more concerned with what is occurring overseas. I understand helping the needy but when is someone going to wake up in Washington and realize that WE, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA has BECOME THE NEEDY! I foresee truckers going on strike a blow I seriously doubt our economy can take. I foresee higher unemployment rates due to gas prices being so high people cannot afford to go to work. We are all waiting patiently for someone to step in and put a cap on gas prices or something but things keep getting worse and no one of any authority to do something about it is. My primary question is WHY? When is someone going to do SOMETHING?

There is one thing i dont understand. How is it in Georgetown, Paris, Lexington. etc $3.75 but in small towns like where i am from it can be 10-15 cents cheaper. If they can be cheaper here, why cant it be the same price in larger cities?

Posted by: Earwig Location: Prestonsburg on May 8, 2008 at 12:39 AM
We can't have it both ways..either we protect the environment and walk or we do as Fred mentioned and start looking for more oil to support our life style.

Well, oil closed at 123.54 a barrel. With 42 gallons to a barrel, that is 2.94 a gallon, unrefined at the well. It typically costs $.50 to ship to refinery, refine, pump to distributors, haul to stations, and then pump to the customer. That is $3.44 a gallon, to which you can add 39.4 cents in state and federal taxes. Gas is going to jump to $3.83 in the next couple of days. I had been trying to time the gas buying days to a couple of days after the market retracts, such as the $112 on Friday's close, which I knew would mean $3.55 a gallon. I filled everything up on Sunday. Laugh, but it saved me a whole $10 bucks. You have the formula, now you can try it out as well. Now for my rant against the Fed. Reserve.. Their reduction in interest rates have caused the dollar to lose about 30% in value the past year, which would indicate oil should be at $89 a barrel or about $3.01 a gallon. Congratulations to all, as we basically have an $.80 a gallon tax, to pay for the big bank bailout.

Everything is going up in price but our pay checks. If gas and food keep going up the way they are. Things are going to get bad. Gas is going to be to much money and everyone is going to stay home and not go to work. With food prices the state need to fix there income tables for the food stamps, and medical. I had to quit my job over a year ago because of the cost of gas. I spent more in gas then i made in a pay period. Me and my husband have 3 kids a 9year old, 3year old, and a 7month old baby. They are the only ones who eats 3 times a day. Me and my husband maybe once. My husband is the only one working and he makes to much for food stamps or medical help.

Who can afford these prices? How about the honorable leader of the country(country's demise). Also, don't be fooled by the country's pacifier, the 600 dollar check.

Posted by: Bart Location: Harrodsburg on May 7, 2008 at 09:48 PM
It's due in part to the dollar not being worth what it once was. For the longest time we had the most valuable money in the world. Now the euro is worth almost twice as much as the dollar. Because oil is traded by the USD, it takes more USD to get it. You people who can't afford to drive to work need to move closer to your workplace. I spend about $12 a week on gas. Not bad. Sell that big ole four wheel drive and buy a smaller Japanese car. Make one trip do all. Stop by the store on the way home to work. When you get home from work, park the car. This is not the end of the world, but it may be an end to the wastefulness that seems to have become the American way of life!

Posted by: Doug Location: Manchester on May 7, 2008 at 09:30 PM
As long as we Keep feeding the oil company's bank account, they will keep on taking & taking & taking !!! Why can't we agree to stop driving on the week ends ,Stay home & give our family & home the attention that has been missing. If we let the oil company's set on their oil, then maybe even the super markets will come down on some thing's to keep them from spoiling . I guess what i'am trying to say is , if we stick together, stop running the roads , car pool, get a bike, walk more, make an effort stop this never ending insanity of rising oil prices. We can complain & gripe & cry till we're all blue , but until we make an effort to change things, it's all in vain.

Posted by: sue Location: manchester on May 7, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Get real what does the goverment think that we are suppose to do. You have people driving two hours to work and the wages aren't going up. Where is the money going to come from to buy grocerys and to pay for all of the high ultiliy bills. What about the schools and the exspense that will make on the tax payers. Talk about people getting forclosures and credit card bills not getting paid. We will all just have to go for bankrupt court, what can they do, put you in jail, at least you will get free food, doctors care, medicence, and not to mention sleeping all day with TV.

Dear Very Concerned Citizen: I appreciate and share your concern about gas prices- but if you really think people in Iraq are living better there than you are here in America, maybe you should move to Iraq. A bad day living as a American citizen here in the USA, beats the best day living as the citizen of another country, ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.

People were trying to get to the pumps over $3.49 a gal. Beeping horns and long lines. Everyone talks about this and no one is doing anything. What are we as AMERICAN'S GOING TO DO? WE CAN'T AFFORD GAS OR FOOD. Better plant your gardens People.

Posted by: robin Location: georgetown on May 7, 2008 at 05:08 PM
This is crazy...and why is it we can't do anything about it? People have to go to work so you have to drive, therefore buy the gas. The government can do something about this, but choose not to. Be careful whom you vote for

Posted by: jerry Location: georgetown on May 7, 2008 at 05:02 PM
There goes your stimulus check folks! That's right...just about the time the check hits the banks, gas goes up AGAIN! What a wonderful plan our government had...let's give them extra money...then raise the prices! You got it...We just got screwed!

Until American's do something other than accept these insane gas prices we can expect more increases. I have contacted my representatives at the state and national level about this issue- I encourage others to do likewise. All Americans must be vocal on this issue. We are being robbed by "Big Oil". Only our elected officials have the power to alter the course of this problem. Crude prices are out of control, but the problem is two-fold. First, we must begin harvesting our own oil supplies from Alaska and other areas. We have better than a 40 year supply of our own oil to draw from- and doing so would drive oil futures down. Then refining capacity must be increased. The oil giants are not building any new refineries yet they get millions in annual tax credits. These tax credits must be stopped until they start building new refineries. Call or write all of your representatives and demand actions such as those I have suggested here. If you have better ideas, please share them.

Gas is $3.75 in Mt. Sterling too!!! I agree with all of you. Something needs to be done and it needs to be done now. These gas companies are the only ones thats going to afford anything. They know that we will buy gas anyway so they don't care how much it is. They don't care about anyone but themselves. Let's do something about it.

How are we supposed to survive. HA HA HA How about CAR POOLING!!!!!!!!!! Or driving a fuel efficient auto!!!!!!! Or how about giving up your cable tv and start reading library books. Or how about switching from name brand groceries to generic. It's not the end of the world people! Americans have had it good for too long, something had to give eventually.

If all the truckers decide to strike or not run their freight because of this ridiculus scam that is going on, we are all going to be in a big hurt. It's going to come to the point were all Americans either are going to start using personal days off because they can't go to work or having to work 2 jobs. There is power in numbers. Unforturnetly, there is no one listening in Washington.

Posted by: Fred Location: Lexington on May 7, 2008 at 04:36 PM

HELP US!!!Something has got to give.We have three kids and between gas and groceries thats all we're working for. Could get a motorcycle but then you have to worry about being safe on these crazy roads.Guess we will have to go back to ridding horses everywhere!!This is absolutly crazy!!

Posted by: Dave Location: Lexington on May 7, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Forgive me if I am uninformed in this matter but I have read elsewhere the increase comes partly due to a rise in oil cost as well as an expected rise of oil hitting $200.00 in the next two years. I know oil is a commoditiy and is based on futures, however, should the price of gas not reflect what the companies have paid for the crude oil and processing with an added profit? The bottom line deals with oil companies and the greed for higher profit return. I acknowledge this is a capitalist country and companies are allowed to charge what so ever for a product/service and make any profit they see fit so long as indivduals are willing to purchase, in the long run, aren't oil companies shooting themselves in the foot? Two Reasons: 1) They are driving down the consumers pocket book to the brink of extinction. Consumers will eventually use less fuel. It will take time but it will happen. 2) The ill reputation caused by legal price gouging will fuel demand for alt. fuels/energy. Someday..

Posted by: Very Concerned citizen worried about our Nation on May 7, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Well, it's time we get rid of the four wheel drive vehicles, and start driving the older model cars. When we can't afford to buy gas, we will not be buying new vehicles that's for sure. Automobile dealers will just have to close the doors. Gas was not this high back in the 60's and 70's when the economy was in bad shape.United States has went to the dogs in the past couple of years. We need to pull the soliders out of Iraq that's where all the money is going, and it's crazy to have our troops over there anyway. Do you think Iraq would step in and help US like that? No they sure would'nt.Iraq's are living better than we are right now. Our children are starving to death in the land of plenty, WE NEED A REAL PRESIDENT TO RUN THIS NATION.

Posted by: Working Poor Location: Winchester on May 7, 2008 at 03:23 PM
You know, I understand the price needs to go up, but I just don't legally or morally see the justification in jumping the price 26 cents. It is definitely price gouging. If the gas is really worth 3.75 a gallon, explain to me why the price had dropped to 3.49 per gallon over the last week, was 3.49 this morning on my way to work, and now this??!? Let's get real people, yes oil is traded on wall street, but come on....this is down right highway robbery! Soon, none of us will be able to afford to even get to work (those of us who still have a job, that is)-we work to earn money for gas to get to work as it is now! Someone in the market is driving these prices up-I can see already that demand is dropping-most people have already changed their driving habits. So much for any family vacations this year-We'll have to stay home and tend our gardens cause we can't even afford food anymore!

I don't understand. If the cost for gas was $62 a barrel last year, then why is it doubled this year. I have a feeling American society is getting screwed somewhere in the process. If this keeps up, nobody is going to have a job, because no one will be able to afford the gas to get them there.

What is the working men and women suppose to do, by the time you pay a babysitter and put gas in your vehicle, there is no point in working, because there goes all the money you made that week. The only thing not raising the US is the manual labors pay checks. It sucks to be us.

Experts expect gas prices to hit the four dollar mark by this summer. Translation= "We WILL raise gas prices to four dollars. Don't say we didn't warn you!"
