Family member of Hazard shooting victims feels sorry for suspect

HAZARD, Ky. (WKYT) - A family member of three people killed in a shooting on a Perry County college campus is speaking out.

Fifty-three-year-old Jackie Douglas Cornett, 20-year-old Caitlin Cornett, and 12-year-old Taylor Cornett were all shot Tuesday night in a parking lot of Hazard Community & Technical College.

"I've lost three kids and that ain't right," Jackie Cornett's father, who's also named Jackie Cornett, said.

Cornett says he lost his son, granddaughter, and adopted daughter in the shooting.

"I'm hurt, and I feel sorry for the boy that done this, and I pray for everybody," Cornett said.

Cornett says time and forgiveness are the only things that can help him heal.

"I gotta pray for the boy that done this," he said. "I loved that boy, and I have to forgive that boy."

Cornett says he wants to focus less on the death of his loved ones, and focus more on the legacies they left behind.

Visitation for Jackie Douglas Cornett, Caitlin Cornett, and Taylor Cornett will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the John C. Combs Arena at Perry County Central High School.

The funeral will follow at 1 p.m.

Police have charged 21-year-old Dalton Stidham with three counts of murder in the case. He plead not guilty to the charges Thursday.
