Woman killed in Letcher County house fire

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - An investigation is underway into a fire that killed an eastern Kentucky woman.

The fire broke out late Friday afternoon in the Thornton community of Letcher County.

Firefighters say when they arrived, the home was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say 73-year-old Virginia Lowe was still inside at the time. A family member says he tried to rescue her, but Lowe had already collapsed inside the home by the time he was able to open the door.

Emergency crews took Lowe to the hospital, but she later died.

Firefighters say the fire started in the front of the house, but so far, they haven't been able to figure out what caused it.

Family members say Lowe owned the home, and lived there with her son and granddaughter.
