GLASGOW, Ky. (AP) - The Glasgow City Council has tabled a
proposal that would have banned smoking in public places and indoor
work places in the city.
The 6-5 vote to put the proposed ordinance on hold indefinitely
Councilman Freddie Norris sponsored the measure and said he talked to about a dozen businesses. He said some were already smoke-free and the others said they wouldn't oppose an ordinance.
Councilman Harold Armstrong said all 10 of the businesses he spoke with opposed smoking, but 8 of the owners said they didn't want government regulation of the issue.
Council member Tim Stutler said he would have voted for the ordinance, saying individual rights should not displace the general welfare and government should act in such cases.
