LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The Jockey Club will announce new safety
recommendations for thoroughbred racing later this summer.
Members of a recently formed safety panel had a conference call
on Wednesday. They've agreed to meet in person next week in Lexington, and again next month in New York.
The meetings were sparked by recent high-profile breakdowns of
horses - including filly Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby. The Jockey Club is looking into policies on breeding, medication and track surfaces, among other things.
The first set of recommendations is expected to be announced Aug. 17 at a round table in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
