Retired teacher killed in Rockcastle County crash

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Police are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash near Mount Vernon Monday night.

The crash happened at the intersection of US 461 and KY 150 in Rockcastle County.

State Police say that a 2011, white, Hyundai Sonata operated by Don R. Barnett, 55, of Mount Vernon, was traveling westbound on KY 150 when it failed to stop for a red light and entered the path of a 2006, blue, Dodge, Caravan, operated by Kimberlee R. Benien, 23, of Somerset. The Dodge was unable to avoid the collision and struck the Hyundai in the side.

Barnett was transported to the Rockcastle County Hospital where he pronounced dead.

Benien and her passenger, Serena Howell, 23, of Somerset, were transported to the Rockcastle County Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Benien was treated and released. Howell was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington where she is listed as stable.

WKYT has learned that Barnett is a retired Rockcastle County High School teacher. We're told he also served as an assistant football coach at one time.
