"One of our officers was out on routine patrol, checking buildings and around 2:00 a.m.. He was going by a church on Moberley Avenue and he found a broken window. The suspect was laying at the bottom of the window outside," said Sgt. Willard Reardon.
Police say they recognized Gilbert before he ran, leading them on a chase throughout the neighborhood before they lost sight of him. But they say he left behind evidence that would soon tie him to another burglary.
When police found a hat with the company logo on it, they went and checked that business and found it had also been broken into.
Gilbert was arrested Wednesday and is being held at the Madison County Detention Center.
Police are looking to see if he is also connected to a recent rash of burglaries of downtown businesses.
