Snowstorm snips power for more than 664,000

BOSTON (AP) - Digging out is going more smoothly in some parts of the Northeast than others after a snowstorm shrouded the New York-to-Boston corridor in 1 to 3 feet of snow.

Hundreds of motorists abandoned their vehicles and even plows got stuck on Long Island, which got 2½ feet of snow. Emergency workers used snowmobiles to try to reach stranded motorists, some of whom spent the night in their cars.

At least six deaths in the U.S. and Canada are being blamed on the snowstorm, including a New York man killed when the tractor he was using to plow his driveway ran off the edge of the road.

Airlines have canceled more than 5,300 flights and Boston's Logan airport remains closed, but New York's airports have begun to allow some flights to land.

More than 650,000 homes and businesses lost electricity.

Amtrak says its New York-Boston route will remain closed today.
