Obama Sends Wife To Campaign In Kentucky Save Email Print

A | A | A

It's coming down to the wire for both democratic candidates for president, hoping to pick up more votes in the bluegrass state.

Hillary Clinton made making several stops around the state, but Barack Obama steered clear from Kentucky on Monday, but his wife, Michele, was scheduled for several appearances.

She's appeared in Hopkinsville, in western Kentucky, and in Louisville Monday afternoon and Lexington tonight.

Her appearance in Lexington is not open to the public and is more a thank you for Obama campaign workers.

Obama is not expected to win in Kentucky. He's been focusing his efforts on Oregon, where voters also head to the polls on Tuesday.

yo sara! hillary took the time to come here in east ky and i was impressed. regardless, you might be right, obama might win. but you ought be ashamed of yourself to express your enthusiasm for this rude, arrogant, disrespectful man. it will be sad if mc cain or obama gets in office. hillary may not be the perfect choice but, she spent years in the white house and has some knowledge of the functions of the white house. furthermore, you will live to regret your expression of these truly idiotic feelings.

she should have saved the money of air fare. she should have shut her mouth all along and he should not be as bold and arrogant as he is and maybe he would have had abetter chance. but not with me.

(CON'T) The answer is no. If war broke out where his family is at he would fight it tooth and nail as would I if my family was there.I am not trying to offend anyone reading this. I just get sick of all the race talk when I myself do not feel the way many people portray whites to be.We are all the same. Regardless of what ignorance our ancestors done. I hate it but there comes a time to let it go in the history books and teach our children better than that.Having a black president would be a milestone the same as having a female president. I however don't think the Whitehouse is a place for a woman.Obama has no family roots nor the knowledge in political affairs to run this country.

(CONT) I don't want to step on toes here but I have had enough of the "backwoods, ignorant, hillbilly talk" I am a sophisticated, loving, christian person and I am sick of all the negative talk about white people.Maybe I don't understand the big picture of it all but to be treated the same means just that in my eyes. Same. No better no worse. We are all human beings with one purpose....to live, raise our children in a safe free country. Right? I can see, after reading the newsletter from Obama's church of 20 years, how everyone would get the idea that he is for Africa and not for this great land of ours. There are several places in the letter that bash white people. If we had a letter like that printed up there would be a lawsuit filed for discrimination. The comment about Barack being a first generation American is TRUE. His father is in Kenya and I don't think he would be all for America.Suppose war was threatened on Africa? Do all of you supporters of his think he would fight?

Posted by: Me! Location: Ky on May 21, 2008 at 11:06 PM
I just went to the Trinity Church website.....Everyone needs to go there and read the newsletter for the church. Talk about racist!!!That right there is the reason for many people to feel racist toward others. I am not a racist person. I have many black friends. I do not consider them any different than myself.however, when i read crap like that it burns me up. Granted there are many ignorant people out there who do not have love in their hearts and cloud their minds with trash. But slavery was many many years ago and if 95% of the white people could go back and change what black people had to go thru we would. So why are we still being ridiculed for our ancestors ungodly acts?It is like the African American Ball. You are either American or African. European or American. If there was an American White Ball, it would be the most racist thing to ever hit the news. I am no better than anyone else but no one is better than me nor do they deserve special treatment just because they are black

Well here goes.I don't blame Obama for not coming to Ky for the simple reason he wanted to go on to the next state and campaign first there.I am NOT prejudice but I don't think Obama is the one to be president of the USA> He has no American values that I see. I feel like he is playing the role and Africa is #1 in his heart. He is, however prejudice. For his wife to make statements like "first time she was proud of America".I think all you Obama supporters will think differently if he is elected.I don't agree that a woman should run a country either. To bad Mr. Kennedy is not healthy and willing to run. He would win hands down and probably wouldn't even have to rally for it.There is a true American!I am surprised to read some of these comments calling Ky "backward and prejudice". You Kentuckians on here making comments like that should be shipped to Africa and live in the wild for a while. You are the ones being prejudice. Prejudice is not only disliking a certain color of people.Wake up!

Yesterday, President Bush apologized to Iraqi leaders because a US sniper shot holes in a Koran. The solider was disciplined. Can you imagine if Obama had done this? Bush, who said that Islam is a "great religion" and one "of peace", has far more ties to Muslims than Obama does. I almost get a big laugh out of how the backwoods people of Kentucky are now claiming that Obama, not them, is racist. Hilarious!

Vote Republican!! in Nov. Keep America the land of the free and the home of the brave. We don't need that drastic of a change. I too have read about the Rev.Wright (or wrong)and what he preaches about "white people".The fact is that Blacks have been taught to stick together and to hate white people. With Obama as leader, you'll see a change, but who will benifit by it? Go Big Mac in Nov!!!

Do you think she will like Kentucky any better than she does the rest of the country? I think not since Hillary kicked Obama's tail end here! Doesn't matter to me anyway, I'm voting for McCain and McConnell in November...wish I could vote for Ernie Fletcher for a clean sweep, these democrats .... well, better not say, they could be messing with the First Ammendment like they are the Second...a man's got to be careful this day and time!

Well they edited everything I said to Bart previously, but Bart snopes.com does not always have the true facts. I really didn't say anything bad before except that Bart apparently enjoys living among these misinformed hatemongers. If you thing hard enough and use your minds, I think we all know why Obama went to Louisville, it doesn't take a genius.

"Posted by: Anonymous on May 20, 2008 at 02:24 PM Ask yourself: What do other countries with black leaders look like? Would I want to live/move there? How's there economy? Education? If you like the answer to these questions then Obama is your man. Think about it!" This is ludicrous. You honestly think the race of a leader determines the direction of a country? Disgusting. What about black governors in other states? They seem to do just fine. At least you didn't try to claim you weren't a racist like some other posters...

Posted by: Chris Location: Mt. Sterling on May 20, 2008 at 07:44 PM
As a lifelong Kentuckian I am really offended that some of the postings have pegged Kentuckians as narrow-minded and backwards in their thinking. I think it is good that Obama came to Kentucky, but he only came to metropolitan areas. If you want to convert people to you go to the small towns just like the Clintons did, not just the big towns. All Kentuckians are important not just those living in the metro areas. I'll also throw out that I am not impressed with the little amount of time that McCain has come to Kentucky. Just because a candidate is winning the primary doesn't mean that the last few states should be shorted on stumping. Ultimately, these candidates have to remember that there is still a general election to consider and while you can ignore some states during primaries you can't ignore any states during the general election.

Rachel yes I agree we do need a change but Obama is not the change we need. There is still too much about this man that we do not know. It really scares me the things that are not yet known about this man. He is a first generation American (his father and family still live in Kenya). With Clinton we know everything there is to know about them-it has all been drug out before-nothing left to hide. I just for the life of me can not understand why people can vote for a man that you know so little about and what you do not know is the scary part. Also there are many of his campaingers that are calling also stating that they are not proud to be an American either. Is this the kind of person we really want running our country? I think not.

Posted by: G Location: KY on May 20, 2008 at 05:15 PM
To Sarah in Somerset: You are sadly mistaken about the state of Ky. I am a very educated person. I am also for Hillary. I am not racist nor do I discriminate against others. I do however feel very strongly about Obama not being our next president. One he does not have the experience to run this country. Two he is not prould to be and American-he stated that he did not have to prove his patriotism because he was running for president, that is all the more reason to show your patriotism. Three look at his church website-they are prejudice!! I have visited this website and they are a commited church to the "mother contient Africa" they also state they are a black church for a black people. My question to you is what would happen to a predominantly white church that made this same statement? Also M. Obama did state that for the first time in her life proud of her country. It does not matter what the context this was said in-it is wrong!!!

Posted by: Rachel Location: Lexington, Kentucky on May 20, 2008 at 04:26 PM
I heard Senator Obama speak in Louisville, Kentucky eight days ago. He was also in Lexington last year, and Louisville earlier this year. Therefore, he has been in Kentucky. Let's keep it positive, folks! We need change- either with McCain, Clinton, or my personal choice... Obama. But for change, we need to work together and get off the computer and WORK for change. For example, I spent 6 hours campaigning today. Regardless.. please go and vote!!

Posted by: someone Location: Barbourville on May 20, 2008 at 02:57 PM
All I know is that it is kind of sad when a canadate has to send his wife to Kentucky to do his campaigning because of the fact he does not want to come or is to afraid to come I hope Clinton wins.

Posted by: Sarah Location: Somerset on May 20, 2008 at 02:32 PM
I hope Obama wins! Hands down...we need change, Bush,Clinton,Bush,Clinton? Hello... I have to say I am a native of Kentucky when I read some of the posts here.. Talk about uneducated.. I would be so ashamed to even know some of these idiots! Kentucky not closed minded??? Sorry This is the most backwards place to live in the nation!that having family values means treating other humans trying to make a difference bad, because you are not willing to open your minds, and listen! Actually hear whats going on. Rev Wright is shameful and only in the spot light because this is his big chance to shine ! How else would anyone know who he was? Dont even bother giving him the time of day. Obama is going to win anyway!! Maybe not in my lovely home of Kentucky.. but in the rest of the nation!!! Watch and see...

(edited) As for Obama I don't beleive he wants the best for the USA, he raising plenty of money but guess where he is getting it????? I think I have an idea but I will not make accusations. People can make their own opinion about Obama no matter what I say, but I can say that I know enough that we are trouble if he gets in. I don't care if he came here to visit, or if Hillary did, I don't base my vote on who visits. I went to vote today, and John Edwards was on the ballot.

Posted by: G-Boy Location: Lexington on May 20, 2008 at 12:22 PM
To steve in Georgetown: No Ky is not a closed minded state. Ky just has more since than to vote for a man that does not hold true American values. He does not have the experience to be the President of the US with the shape our country is currently in. We do not know enough about this man to place him in office. Also yes he is prejudice. All you have to do is look at the church website he has attended for 20 years. I have gone to the Trinity church website of south side Chicago and yes I do believe this Church to be prejudice against the white people. Guess what I am black and think this so imagine how the white person must feel!!!

Posted by: Bart Location: Harrodsburg on May 20, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Yeah, let's look at spouses for a minute, shall we? Bill Clinton... well need I say more? Cindy McCain got into a whole heap of trouble when she was stealing pills from her charity and eating them like M&M's. Last week you all were moaning that Obama was coming to Kentucky. This week you are moaning that he is not coming to Kentucky. I wouldn't come here either among all of you misinformed hatemongers. I would go where the people want change and a hope for America's future.

Posted by: Note for naiima from GA on May 20, 2008 at 11:06 AM
It was an open and closed statment she made. At the age of 44, she said "For the first time in my life, I am proud of my country." Where is she talking about politics? She didn't clarify why she was finally proud. You can't make a statement like that and not expect criticism without explanation or clarification.

Vote for McCain and it won't matter what Obama does.

Posted by: mj Location: lex on May 20, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Obama must not care much about winning KY in the general election either if he can't find the time to campaign here at all. His wife (who did state that for the first time in her life she is proud to be an American) does not cut the mustard here. He should have made a stop here.

Posted by: JC Location: Madison County on May 20, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Bush will look like an angel in the white house if Obama gets elected.

Posted by: naiima Location: GA on May 20, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Michelle Obama made no unamerican statements. For those of you who actually took the time to listen, instead of ignorantly believing the spin some politicians put on it, you would know that. She was talking about politics, not the country as a whole. But I guess its easier to let the politicians do your thinking for you.

Posted by: X Location: The Spot on May 20, 2008 at 09:53 AM
If Michelle Obama isn't fair game, why is she running all around Kentucky making political speeches. Sorry Obamas, you can't have it both ways.

Posted by: Not now, not ever on May 20, 2008 at 07:46 AM
Obama WILL NOT get my vote in the primary, but if he wins the primary, he WILL NOT get my vote in the Presidential election. He say "lay off his wife" but sends her out to do his job. You can't "lay off" someone when they are opening their mouth making statements and stumping for their own spouse. If she sat back and kept quiet, then YES, we would lay off. That's not the reason I won't vote for him; it's much bigger than that. I don't like his healthcare plan and I surely don't agree with his proposed foreign policy. And no, I am not a Bush supporter who will just fall in line with McCain. Bush was just the lesser of the two evils at the time. Al Gore wasn't (and will never be) the answer and John Kerry was to wishy washy. The Office of the President just doesn't seem to have the same power, esteem, or whatever you want to say like it did when FDR and the likes held office. CONGRESS runs everything now; the veto is the only thing a President has to their advantage now.

Posted by: RS Location: Lexington on May 20, 2008 at 05:42 AM
He has to focus on states he has a chance of winning in the general election. It's nothing against KY, it's just good sense to focus on states where he can get votes come November.

Posted by: KJ Location: Richmond on May 19, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Why would he even bother to send his wife? He does not care enough about this state to show up himself. Her appearance was not even open to the public. What is she afraid of? That the truth will come out about the real Obama? Well there is more daily. Go to his church website that he attended for 20 years and it states how the church and those that attend that they have a commitment to Africa. Not that they have a commitment to the USA but Africa. I as a US citizen have great problems with this!!!! I am proud to be an American and do not hold a dual citizenship with Kenya but am 100% American unlike Obama. Make your voice heard KY vote Hillary!!!

Posted by: Lynn Location: Lexington on May 19, 2008 at 11:02 PM
For your information, Senator Obama has been to Louisville and Lexington. Would you have voted for him anyway? I doubt it.

Posted by: Steve Location: Georgetown on May 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Obama couldn't come to a closed minded state such as KY. Most people here do hold race as an issue. And as far as anything unamerican about him, lets get serious. This man actually wants to make a difference for the people. This government is by the people for the people, let take it back in 08.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 19, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Amen men to all those saying Obama doesn't care about KY because he does not!! Further more he does not care about our country nor does his wife or the campaign workers that are working for him. I had one to call me the other day and actually tell me they were not proud to be an American and we should elect Obama!! Give me a break. That is the last thing our country needs!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Dixie on May 19, 2008 at 10:12 PM
I could care less if he comes to Kentucky or not. Such a shame that we don't have any good ones to pick for President. Billary isn't any good, Obama isn't. McCain is better than the two. It's a shame Huckabee didn't get any where. Look at the gas and oil prices now, and every thing else that's going down hill. If Billary or Obama get's elected we are all doomed.

Posted by: CJ Location: Ashland on May 19, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Maybe Obama did not come to Kentucky, but that is due to Kentucky's primary being held so late in the season that the majority of the voters have already put him over the top. What he wants to do for working people is very admirable, and to allow yourselves to be swayed to vote for McCain simply because Obama did not actively stump in Ky merely demonstrates your support to the Bush administration policies for the war, the economy, health care, education, etc., but the fact is the last eight years have been hell for the majority of Americans. A vote for McCain will be the final nail in the coffin that the Bush administration created. I hope you all wake up before November. Remember, in Kentucky, united we stand, divided we fall, and this country cannot take much more division before it crumbles.

Posted by: KentuckyGuy Location: Bluegrass on May 19, 2008 at 08:49 PM
Obama says it's not fair to pick on his wife. Is it fair for Michelle to say America is downright mean in 2008 and that she has never been proud of America in all her adult life? I think Michelle is downright mean and I sure as heck ain't never and never will be proud of her or her old man.

Posted by: Linda Location: Paintsville on May 19, 2008 at 07:14 PM
I also find it very offensive that Obama doesn't think KY important enough to even visit the state. He won't get my vote!

If I was Barack Obama I wouldn't come to Kentucky either. Most people here are still very backwards in their way of thinking. There is no reason for him to come here. You people were complaining about him when he was comming here now you are complaining about him because he's not comming here. Just seems to me the majority of you just wanna belly-ache. I would concentrate on Oregon as well. How do you backward Kentuckians feel now being snubbed by a black man? I still support him and I will to the end. He does have our best interest at heart even the narrow-minded ones. GO OBAMA!!

Posted by: David Location: Lexington on May 19, 2008 at 06:18 PM
I don't feel slighted, I have cable and the internet, too, so I can still hear what he has to say. I've made up my mind, and even though as a registered Republican I won't be voting in the Democratic primary tomorrow,I'll be voting for Obama in November. And yes, there are a lot of racists in this state who wouldn't vote for the second coming of Jesus if He came back as a black man. I'm saying that as a middle aged conservative white guy who has lived here all of my life. It's a shame.

Posted by: Chris Location: Mt. Serling on May 19, 2008 at 05:23 PM
I find it pretty offensive that Obama, who is running for President doesn't think that Kentucky isn't important enough to even make a personal appearance. Regardless of whether he will win Kentucky or not it just shows a political disdain for our fair commonwealth.

Posted by: Steve Location: Lexington on May 19, 2008 at 05:16 PM
Well, I made up my mind today...and I'm voting for Hillary! This decision was made based on the fact that Obama has given up on the Bluegrass State and it's people based on polling data, and Hillary and Bill have been criss-crossing the state for 2 weeks now...spending money, bringing the media with them, and helping local economies all over our state during these trying times. So, with that in mind, I'm supporting Hillary.

Posted by: Don Location: London on May 19, 2008 at 04:01 PM
If Obama cared about Ky and Kentukians he would be here.

Posted by: Mike Location: Danville on May 19, 2008 at 03:37 PM
I guess Kentucky is not important enough for Obama to come himself. I guess shows the people of Kentucky just how he feels about us as a state. I guess Oregon is far more important. He already knows he has a large lead in Oregon, it makes sense to me that you would campaign in a state where your opponent had the lead. But I guess the people of Oregon could say the same thing about Hillary. We can only hope however that Clinton pulls this out, if not another four years of the way things are now. Obama will never beat McCain, what will happen is that the majority of the people voting for Hillary, will vote for McCain. It has nothing to do with Obama being African American, it has to do with is name being Obama. I think Colin Powell would have made the best President this country has seen to date, if he has chosen to run.

Posted by: Sheila Location: Richmond on May 19, 2008 at 03:20 PM
If Obama can't find the "time" to come visit the state of KY himself he doesn't deserve our votes. He is the one running not his wife. He just lost my vote!!!!

If Obama wants everyone to lay off his wife, than don't send her out on the campaign to open her mouth with Un-American statements.
