Gas prices inch closer to the four dollar mark here in central Kentucky. People filling up in Lexington are digging deeper in their pockets after prices jumped, again Wednesday morning.

The price for a gallon of regular unleaded now sits at $3.95 at some stations. That's a new record for this area.

Not all stations made the change. The Thorton's on Winchester Road, at least for the time being, has gas for $3.66. even though the stations around it made the jump.

Many drivers waited in a crowd of cars to take advantage of the cheaper price. At Swifty on New Circle Rd., the line became so long it even caused some traffic trouble along New Circle.

The pump jump comes as oil is selling for a record high. A barrel of oil hit an all-time high of more than $132. Nationally, the average for gas now sits at $3.80 a gallon.

Why are we still buying oil from other countries? When our own reserves are at 97%, which when at 100% can last the US 200 years at the rate we us gas now. These gas prices do not need to be this high, when we have oil here in the US now that can be used.

I agree that the ethanol stuff is a joke.. thats jus another way to nab more money.. NO MILEAGE and you ramble on about what vehicle.. a 4 cyl. guzzles that (edited). the tree huggers and AL GORE needs to shut up. and lets drill for our own oil.. and i agree with the one that made the comment about the strike.. lets set at the house for a day.. not buy nothing gas or anything.. not work.. if everyone would do that.. in one day it would send them a crippiling message.. see how fast they drop their (edited) PRICES and ppl Bush has nothing to do with the prices the only thing he could really do is put a Freeze on prices and without the approval of out (edited) congress he cant even do that..

I think you people that are saying gas is "inching" towards 4 bucks a gallon needs to learn what the word inching means. In Middlesboro alone it went up 20 cents in one nite. This is crazy. Get Bush outta office and I bet it will drop. Instead of buying it over seas why not get it from his reserve or here in the U.S. I think capitol hill should be asking a lot of questions and getting tons of answers. This is crazy.

I think its a shame that the president is letting gas get so high. He needs to do something about it. We have our own reserves why don't we use it instead of dealing with the other countries. If we can't do that then I suggest that all the american people just sit down and close the United States down for a day and see what happens then. I mean no shopping no working anything. I just don't know how they think poor people are supposed to live. I hope Hillary gets in as president. I know she will get our economy. People were crazy for putting Bush back in for another four years. Look at what he has done to our nation. We don't need another republican in office but if Hillary doesn't win the democratic vote then I will vote for McCain. I have faith that Hillary will win it though. I still don't understand why we can't use our own gas reserves. I think it is very stupid of the government not to let the nation use what is ours. That would save us alot of money in the long run.

I have got it figured out. We need to all stick together like we did eight years ago and elect to more oil men to the Whitehouse for eight more years. WOW !! I recall when SLICK Willey freed up the reserve and suddenly gas was $.89 a gal.

This will rebuke StreetSurviver (sic) answers: Q) Why not drill for oil here? A)Exxon-Valdez ruined that, the oil co's will NEVER watch what they're doing and will rape the environment while drilling. Q)Why Not Build refineries A)Oil companies won't because they are afraid that we will move too quickly on alternative fuels and they won't be able to make back a 1000% profit on the investment in the refinery. Q)Nuke Power? A)No one wants one anywhere near their home. If you are willing to sell 1000 acres beside your home to do this, call your Congressman. Q) Why aren't we doing coal conversion? A) We can't get enough coal out of the ground fast enough now to fill the regular coal orders, much less mine enough to run a conversion plant (much less 10 of them) and actually make a difference in fuel prices. There aren't enough mines or enough available land for sale to mine underneath, unless you're willing to let mining corp mine underneath existing cities (that would go over well).

IF YOU WANT TO STICK IT TO THE OIL CO THIS WEEKEND JUST DONT DRIVE ON MON. THINK ABOUT IT IF EVERYONE WOULD STAY HOME AND DONT BUY ANY GAS, THAT WILL GET'EM. NOW THIS E85 IS A JOKE! DOWN HERE IN THE SOUTH, WE HAVE BEEN USING E85 FOR YEARS, IT IS CALLED "MOONSHINE". I THINK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD BUILD A STILL AND USE THE SHINE IN THIER CARS. WHY NOT? AS I SAID WE "GOOD O'L BOYS" HAVE USED IT FOR YEARS AND YOU DONT NEED A GOV CONTROLLED "FLEX FUEL" CAR TO USE IT. HOW DO YOU THINK THAT NASCAR GOT STARTED?

Posted by: The Headline... on May 23, 2008 at 12:17 PM
makes me laugh. Gas didn't "inch" towards $4 per gallon. It took a freakin running start and jumped 25 cents in one day from $3.70 to $3.95. How is that inching? Gas typically will go down about 8 to 10 cents after the price goes up which is supposed to appease the consumer. Then when it goes up, it doesn't go up 10 cents, it goes up 25 cents. That is not inching; that is leaps and bounds! The got us; bend over and just hope you get kissed in the process.

This will answer the ?'s for Zatoichi..... Q)Why aren't we drilling oil? A)Tree huggers are afraid of disturbing a Caribou herd In Alaska. Q)Why aren't we building refineries? A) Congressional Leaders not the President.Q)Why aren't we using nuke power? A)Congressional Leaders not the President. Q) Why aren't we doing coal conversion? Congressional Leaders not the President. Hitler changed coal to gas in WWII and we can't do it now, and they said Germany was a Communist country,(HELLO). I recieved an email a couple of weeks ago that showed gas prices around the world and one particular country stood out to me with thier gas prices @ .45 cents per gallon (Iran). If you have anymore questions you would like an answer for, just post them and I will be glad to answer them.

Any of you see the CNN report, " Out Of Gas "?????........ Get this, the OIL COMPANIES will not spend the money to put in a E85 pump at each gas station........ And our Government is NOT FORCING them to do it!!! You can go to cnn.com and read all about it!

A top U.S. official rejects a proposal to release oil from an emergency stockpile to bring down gas prices.(5) years ago this weekend gas was $1.49 a $2.51 increase. I have always said that our Presidents are only a title and a P.R. person, people blame Bush for this but as you can see it's congress that make up the minds of the presidents. When you report $36 billion dollar profit, the GAS COMPANIES can do something about this issue. "We the people of the United States" can and should get together and make something happen. I'm only one person, the least of multitudes but WE need to come together and make this happen. I don't know what but something. My main concern is people that make min. wages think about it, if you make $6.25 you clear around $4.80 the average car has a 20 gal. tank it cost $80 to fill it up. these people have to work over 2 days just to fill their tanks. That leaves around $100 for the week for utiliies, food, diapers and insurance etc... .People can't survive....

Posted by: Melissa Location: Johnson Co, Kentucky on May 23, 2008 at 09:33 AM
You would think our Government would step in and put a ..... " FREEZE ON GAS PRICES " they can do that much! Maybe we all should go on STRIKE!!!! And STOP EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW, UNTIL THEY DO.

My Dodge Ram gets 12 MPG on the road--Will somebody tell me why gas is so high??

Posted by: Laughing Location: Lexington on May 23, 2008 at 06:43 AM
The people complaining about the high price of gas think nothing of buying a bottle of water for a buck or spending $4 on a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Hint people; water out of the faucet is cheaper, just use an empty bottle. Quit yer beeitchin about the price of gas when you drive 80 mph. For those of you in Eastern Ky like "D" in Harlan; MOVE to get a better job and life. Nothing says you have to live in a depressed part of the state. Others have moved away and made a better life. Get an education! If you are poor and can prove it, a college education is practically FREE for you. Don't blame anyone but yourself if you can't get ahead because you won't move. Sheesh, how stupid can people get?

It'll be nice to the see the record profits that the petroleum companies with record in the next quarter... also about E85... the only reason it's 15% gasoline is because people would drink it if it were pure ethanol (moonshine). The government is looking into suing OPEC... a little late if you ask me. Come on government, do something for the people that you serve.

Posted by: Dave Location: Lexington on May 22, 2008 at 02:29 PM
Charlie & Fred --- Fred is correct about the efficency of E85. It is a little better than 50 percent of gas but not much. Also, E85 is found largely in the corn belt states in the midwest where corn is grown. The probelm lies when transportation cost to get the fuel from the corn belt to other areas of the U.S. When they factor in the cost to get it here with trucks using diesel, the costs become too expensive for what you get. Not enough bang for the buck if you will. In these states, an ethanol blend is available in 89 octane. Again this makes sense if it to be sold locally in the "belt". Actually the 89 octane with an ethanol blend is cheaper than the 87 octane without. Farmers in Ky. are reluctant to go to corn instead of tobacco because they can get two full crops in one season. Corn has a longer growing cycle. In the end since it is a mix of oil and corn by product, the savings is minimal. It would not take long before corn prices rose to all time levels as oil.

Okay, Im confused!!! Why did gas prices get so high any way (I do not want any stupid answers). I just wish that Clinton, Obama, or Bush would come to a place like Harlan with out any money and live here for a month, trying to make it. If your not a coal minner, nurse or CSX worker, you can not make it!!! And its hard to get a job around here because there is so many people needing one to support their family. I know from experience, Im a new mother and wife, and both my husband and I have a job, and I have to buy diapers that my child is allergic to, my husband and I can not go to the doctor when we are sick, b/c we have no medical card, and its just like NO BODY CARES THAT CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! *HINT HINT* Well, I have more to say, but I want to be nice about it, lol......

You know I live out in the country..I can't afford to get a job in the "city". I am thankful to God that he provided my husband a good paying job not to far from our house. I wouldn't know what to do if I we had to drive EVERYDAY into town...and you know they can't make cars affordable for people to just go out and get one to make life just a little more affordable...easier....can we say hello DEPRESSION? Oh I am sorry...it's call Recession now right?

Posted by: john Location: lexington on May 22, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Not only are we going to be paying higher prices for fuel everything else is going up because tractor trailers deliver all goods to stores and including walmart so the truckers will be uping freight prices to compensate for fuel so everything else will be going up if you havent noticed already. Also garbage collection companies have raised thier rates due to fuel and so has KU. The Police in our state have been told to cut back on their driving to save on fuel that means there will be more crime in this state. It never ends.

Posted by: Lindsey Location: Somerset on May 22, 2008 at 11:37 AM
I think paying 3.95 for a gallon of gas is completely ridiculous! It took 55 dollars yesterday to fill up my 4 door sedan! That's ridiculous! But, there are all the environmentalists that won't allow us to drill on our oil-rich land. Therefore, I say if they want to pay for my gas every month, then let them continue to oppose the drilling for oil in our own country, which would cut out any dependance on foreign oil. However, since I am not receiving a check from them every month for my gasoline needs, I say kick them out of the country and drill so we won't be reliant on foreign oil. Therefore, gas prices will go down. This is crazy! And I agree with Kay in Pike Co. Why are gas prices so different this summer then they were last summer? I'm working just to buy gas--nevermind the other bills I have to pay. Who cares about them?

Posted by: TONY Location: LANCASTER on May 22, 2008 at 11:06 AM
I AGREE THAT MEMORIAL DAY IS AN EXCUSE, BUT PERSONALY,I DIDN'T THINK THAT $3.79 A GALLON LAST WEEKEND IS WHAT I LOOK AT AS BEING "CHEAP".

Posted by: Note to MAD CONSUMER in Richmond on May 22, 2008 at 10:49 AM
I am happy that one station down the road has a different (lower) price than all the ones who raised their price in unison to $3.95. It's called COLLUSION when they all charge the same price! The station you are referring to always has the lowest price in Richmond. The owner of that station never follows suit with the other stations which is the reason she gets the business. If her prices are lower, that is a great thing. She always gets my business for two reasons: 1) Her gas prices are the lowest in Richmond and 2)That is a locally owned station so the profits stay with her. If you haven't noticed, she changed from a Marathon and is not called "Food Mart." No big oil affiliation so my guess is she went independent; that's a good thing!

Posted by: Broke Location: Lexington on May 22, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Okay...the gas prices are issued by corporate to the stations who then change the prices as dictated. The prices are different in areas around town due to the neighborhood income brackets. In New Jersey they have a law where the gas prices can be changed once a week and they chose Fridays. Why doesn't Kentucky adopt this law as it makes sense! President Bush is an oil man so why would he want to change anything?! It is absolute theft the way the oil companies are treating their own customers. They are making record earnings each quarter and here we are struggling to keep the car tanks from running dry but then we are too dependent on our autos, too. If I could afford a Prius I would buy one today!

Posted by: Fred Location: Lexington on May 22, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Doesn't matter, Charlie...E85 is half the price, but it takes twice as much to do the same thing. It's a wash, in that respect. Other than that, good idea. Less dependency on oil. We just need to grow some corn and get on with it!

Yeah, Kentucky democrats you go ahead and Vote for the Republicans 'cause your Hillary or Obama didn't win the Democrat Nomination. Soon you will be paying $10.00 per gal., when Bush took office in 2001 the Gas was $1.46 per. gallon! I think I will move out of the U.S. it cost too much to be an American! And I served 27yrs in the U. S. Army. Gave you your vote so you can let those rich Republicans, get richer! Its no wonder they (yes, the rich Republicans) think we're Hillbilly inbreds. They think we are so stupid, well you can let them think it about you. But, I will never vote for the rich rich to get richer.

Maybe this country should become as self-centered as france and take care of our own and stop trying to help ungrateful countries who only hate Americans. We've got BIG problems here and America needs to stop being the world's door-mat. Not enough focus is on doing something about the gas problem. This country's too busy dealing with and supplying aid where it's not appreciated. Do you see any of these oil-rich countries trying to help America...NO!

Remember the million man march...why don't we have a million person march against these high gas prices...sure as hades can't hurt...march on Washington...it looks like the only option we have left..all the "hearings/trials" or whatever they want to call them are doing nothing, but giving the big wigs air time to deny any coersion in the prices...LOL!! sure...I believe that as much as the next person...wake up America..we are being deceived greatly and we are letting them do it to us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND our paychecks are getting smaller. People wake up and spread the news...we are in a RECESSION. I don't care what the experts say....things are BAD and will only get worse. STOP DRIVING SO MUCH! It's our incessant demand for gas that keeps driving the prices higher. Start carpooling to work, stop going to the grocery store daily to get what you want to eat that evening (do it once a week instead), trade off (or burn) that Expedition, Tahoe, or other gas-guzzler, and stop taking joyrides around New Circle Rd just because you're bored at home. Stay there and if everyone did this, it would decrease demand and within a week prices would decrease.

What I don't understand is last summer oil was 66 dollars a barrel, and a gallon of gas was 2.59, it has now more than doubled by the barrel and gas is 3.95 a gallon, so my question is why wasn't gas cheaper last summer? Well we all know the answer to that I guess, making the oil companies richer

You can't get any elected person, from the president down to try to do anything about high gas prices. they are afraid they will make somebody mad and won't get any more contributions to their campaign. We have the clean, safe and green technologies to do this but WE have let the folks like Al Gore tell us we can't. It is about time we tell Gore and all the left wing enviro-mutants that we want our country back.

I agree, Tammy. It'll probably reach $4.00 by the weekend. I think the gas stations should be charged with price gouging when they pull crap like this. Do they think we're stupid, that they raise prices right around memorial day weekend and we won't notice? Why is a barrell of oil $ 132.00 a gallon? That is crazy!!! The rich get richer and the poor keep getting poorer. How are truckers making it? I work 5 days a week 8 hours a day and can barely make it from pay check to paycheck. It takes half of my salary for fuel. What is this world coming to? I can't believe this. How are air planes flying? You can't go anywhere on vacation because of the fuel prices, you can't even afford to go to the groceries anymore. I wish that all of the truck drivers would go on strike for about 2 weeks because this world can't run without them.
