SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - He's believed to have killed four people -- and himself.

Law enforcement officials in Southern California say ex-cop Christopher Dorner apparently killed himself with a shot to the head. It's believed to have happened amid a fierce shootout with officers surrounding a cabin in the San Bernardino mountains.

Officials also believe Dorner spent most of his time hidden in a condominium close to the command post set up to find him. He's believed to have entered the condo through an unlocked door sometime on Feb. 7.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon says Dorner remained there until the condo's owners came to clean it. When the owners arrived, he tied them up and fled in their car. That led to a chase, a shootout that killed a sheriff's deputy and a last stand in a cabin.

Officials weren't sure if Dorner was killed by one of their bullets or by a fire that engulfed the cabin as they fired tear gas inside. Now they believe he died by his own hand.
