13 Breckinridge County Middle School students have been disciplined after it was discovered they drank alcohol while on the bus on the way to school.

One parent, who did not want to be identified, says the students were mixing vodka and Gatorade on the bus before they arrived at the middle school. He says some of the students were visibly drunk.

The Superintendent of Schools says the students were disciplined, and their parents were notified, but went on to say the students were not drunk.

The major criticism seems to be against schools officials. Many parents say the incident should have been reported to the sheriff's department.

1st we take paddling out of school then we stop letting parents busted their butts. where is the descipline. and we wonder why kids are out of control. goverment start letting parents be parents and school to be able to discline them. and we would not have these problems. so lets just put them on the naughty mat and hope they learn their lesson and maybe when they go out and hurt someone bad enough we can sit them down an extra ten min......come on people where is your brain. call the police and let them be disiplined the right way..oooooo yeah since when is 13 year old kids not alond to drink on the school bus that is a shocker. fighting 5 min. on naughty mat, not doing homework 5 min. on naughty mat, smarting off to a adult 5 min. on a naughty mat, drinking on school bus 5 min. on naughty mat, doing drugs 5 min. on naughty mat, murder 5 min. on naughty mat, and so on what have they learned = how to set on there butts and get up and everything be ok.

Kids will be kids.THe high and mighty never made a mistake, and homeschooling may or may not be the answer.I have known people that were homeschooled and yes they were smart and educated, but had no real world skills at all.The minute they saw something bad they freaked and didn't know how to handle it.We blame everything but the way it is.Kids will be kids!!!Smack their butts and then they will learn!!!I got drunk on the bus in Middle School,I didn't get cuaght, but I had great parents and that isn't where I got the booze.I think we should think back to when we were teenagers and quit being such hypocrites!!!!

I agree the police should have been notified and the kids should be prosecuted for their crime. Its a shame that kids are allowed to get by with things like that with minimal punishment. Just like the kids that got caught drunk camping out at Hazard High School. when the police arrsted the kids that got caught drunk and what did the city authorites over the police do, they got upset because the police did their duty. when they caught them drinking by just casually checking on them..the people who allow our teens to drink or get alcohol for our children should also be prosecuted..A crime is a crime no matter what the circumstances or your families position in the community. rich, poor, race shouldnt matter. what should matter is, that they were breaking the law and when they are not prosecuted the way they should be. they are being taught that for some people there is ways above or around the law and this is the wrong thing to teach our kids.

Police should've been called and can handle the situation from the LEGAL point of view, from the caretaker's point of view the parents can ground them or take away their Ipod for a week or whatever lame punishment that means nothing that they give them. But to not let the legal system take part in an ILLEGAL act is ludicrous, even if they aren't jailed or anything, just the process will affect them in a positive way and maybe keep them out of trouble in the future. Otherwise, they're already doing this in middle school and are destined to be on the wrong side of the law for life if not adjusted now.

Yep! just keep letting the parents handle it. Eventually, they can discipline their children for DUI, Wreckless homicide, murder.....Get Real. What is zero tolerance for if it isn't enforced. Someone has to be responsible for a wake up call. Middle School? Where did they get the booze? Hats off and Thank You Hazard Police for doing your job with Pride. It should never matter who the person is if they are breaking the law. The law was never intended to apply to a selected few. We need to stop complaining about who's feelings get hurt or who's name gets dirty and do what is right in teaching our children how to behave responsibility and respectfuly.

The main reason this was on the news.Is because my child was threaten by several students that was involed in the drinking.Which had nothing to do with my child. If people would control their childern, and the right thing would have been done first. This would have never made it to the news.Kids make mistakes, but do u want drugs and liquor given to your children.School officals should have handle this properly. My child had nothing to do with this, and was threatened with his life.More people need to step up and teach our children right. If this was my child involed i would expect the school to call law enforcement to put a scare of god into their butts.Tell your kids to stop the threats and this will be the end. Lets all be parents together. god bless you all

We had the same problem at a middle school in Berea. Most of the kids just got suspended for a few days. Gosh, just let the kids stay home, that will teach them. Send the spoiled brats to alternative school for a semester and let them have to deal with kids that do the same thing.

They should give them all time out. That'll show 'em!

In response to Diane from Mt. Sterling ... This indicates a possible problem with these children's lives at home and not the school. These kids were caught and their parents were notified. That being said, I'm sure your homeschooled kids will grow up to be extremely smart, well-educated, productive members of society with exceptional social skills. Oh, for your next lesson in spelling & grammar, "homeschool" is one word and not capitalized.

I also think that this should have been took to the sheriff if they was old enough to act like an adult, they should be punished like an adult.

Posted by: Jeb Location: KY on May 22, 2008 at 10:51 AM
People keep saying "where are the parent?" Okay, now that this is made public, let the parents dole out the discipline. People will be watching how it is taken care of. The only way the cops should get involved is if an adult knowingly gave it to them, (supplied it to them).

This is just a symptom of a much bigger problem with our public schools. We will see more stories like this and they will get worse because No one in the system will admit that our schools are broken. Thank God for Home Schooling.

It WAS handled correct, kids are in a leanring stage in life and they have to learn what is right and wrong, morals are gone anymore and they are not really taught rights and wrongs anymore.

Where'd they get the booze in the first place?! Where's their guidance? I certainly wouldn't want my child to ride the bus with with such goings on. They ever consider suspending these students from riding the bus as well as drug and alcahol counseling to teach them the dangers of this stuff before it gets any further.

Last year my child and a few others were caught drinking on the bus and the police were called. I think reporting it was the right thing to do. They were underage on a public school bus, they were breaking the law. Being suspended for 3 days wouldn't have taught my teenager a thing, but being questioned by the police and almost expelled sure did.

Let the parents deal with it...have we not learned anything from Hazard?!?!?!

Posted by: AC Location: Corbin on May 21, 2008 at 10:05 PM
sounds like the school handled the situation appropriately by notifying the kids' parents and disciplining the kids (i assume suspension would be in order). why get the sheriff's dept. involved? some people just like to complain.

Posted by: trudge Location: ashland on May 21, 2008 at 09:35 PM
outrageous! back track and found out which home it came from! the students had to get it from somewhere with easy access, say mom & dad's cabinet!

Posted by: Dave Location: Garden Springs on May 21, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Been there done that, got caught and got suspended too.

Posted by: Zatoichi Location: Richmond on May 21, 2008 at 06:44 PM
Next thing you know the kids won't be allowed to smoke dope or snort coke on the bus. What is this world coming to?
