Gov. Steve Beshear says he's still hoping the state lands a Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway in time for next year, despite NASCAR's indications to the contrary.
Beshear returned Sunday night from a meeting in North Carolina
with Bruton Smith, who announced last week he was buying the race
track located halfway between Cincinnati and Louisville. Smith has
said he's looking to host a Sprint Cup date there next year.
NASCAR chairman Brian France, however, said before the Coca-Cola
600 on Sunday that the area is already "well served."
Nevertheless, Beshear says he's hoping for a race there "in the
near future." The governor says he and Smith are planning to meet
Jerry Carroll, the Kentucky Speedway's current owner, says he
thinks there's still a possibility for a race there in 2009.
