Paducah Firefighters File Age Discrimination Complaint

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - A dozen Paducah firefighters filed a complaint with the Paducah Human Rights Commission accusing the city of age discrimination because two tests for promotions in the department were canceled.

Then-fire chief Redell Benton canceled testing in August after three of 14 candidates for captain withdrew. Eight of the 11 remaining candidates being over 40 years old.

Firefighters' union president Barry Carter and 11 other firefighters, say the discrimination is evident because tests were canceled after younger members of the department withdrew.

City Human Resources director Herschel Dungey says age had nothing to do with the decision.

The two sides could agree to abide by the human rights commission's findings or could appeal to circuit court.
