DUNLAP, Calif. (AP) - The founder of a California wild animal park says a worker killed by a lion was a female intern-volunteer.
Cat Haven founder and executive director Dale Anderson was crying Wednesday as he read a one-sentence statement about the fatal mauling at the exotic animal zoo he has operated since 1993.
Anderson says the intern was attacked and killed when she entered the lion's enclosure.
He refused to take questions from reporters, but extended thoughts and prayers to the victim's friends and relatives.
Cal Fire spokesman Ryan Michaels told The Associated Press that a woman who got into a cage with the lion was attacked and fatally injured at the Cat Haven sanctuary in Dunlap, Calif., about 45 miles east of Fresno in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Michaels says he thinks the lion was put down because law enforcement officers at the scene fired shots, and the Fresno County sheriff's office said on the radio that the animal had been secured.
