Child Killers Sentenced

They could have faced live in prison for abusing and killing 2 year old Callie Robinson, but after more than 2 and a half hours of deliberation, the jury Saturday sentenced Verona Brinegar to 25 years in prison and Ronald Crabtree 35 years on the murder charge. Both were given 10 year sentences on the charge of criminal abuse with those sentences to run consecutively.

Brinegar's attorney asked the jury for the minimum sentence of 20 years, arguing that she would not be eligible for parole for at least 17 years at which time her two other children would be adults and in no danger of being abused. But the prosecution argued there are certain crimes where the minimum sentence is just not appropriate.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Jennifer Hall told the jury, "This is one of those crimes. When you torture and murder a two year old, the minimum sentence is not appropriate."

The mothers of both defendants made impassioned pleas for leniency, but Prosecutor Hall deftly used those pleas as a reason why the jurors should impose equal justice. She told them, "Both of these defendants enjoyed what Callie did not. They clearly have mothers who love them and are willing to come in here even when their children are grown adults and continue to protect them."

After the sentencing, Becky Robinson, little Callie's aunt said justice had been served in that Callie's brothers will be safe now.
