Barge Crash Stops River Traffic In Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman says Ohio
River traffic has been halted after the collision of a barge with a concrete wall.
Lt. John Adkins says the towing vessel Helen Lay was headed
upriver at 3:50 a.m. EDT Monday with 12 loaded coal barges when the
operator lost steering. One of the barges struck the wall near Joe's Crab Shack at Louisville.
The collision came on the heels of the river channel being narrowed due to the sinking of two iron ore barges on Friday, but Adkins says there's no evidence linking the two incidents.
He says there was adequate room to navigate around the sunken
barges and the crash was upstream from that location.
Adkins says the iron ore had been removed from the sunken barges
by Monday morning and equipment was expected to arrive by noon to
begin the process of raising the barges.
