A boil water advisory is in effect for the entire city of Stanton due to a major water main break overnight. A 12-inch main at the Beach Fork Water Commission is the main water supply for Stanton.
Employees at the Beach Fork Water Commission noticed the break just after midnight on Monday. Nearly a dozen employees began working to repair the break between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.
The water plant has nearly 2,400 customers in Stanton. Many were without running water Monday morning, as well as many local businesses.
There is not a determined cause for the water main break. There was speculation that heat, along with this past week's dry weather, may have contributed to the problem. However, that is not likely the case. The broken pipe was nearly 20 years old and age is suspected to be the primary cause.
The water main is expected to be fixed by the end of the day on Monday. The boil water advisory will be in place until further tests on the water can be taken.
