A man was hit and killed while standing in the middle of an eastern Kentucky road.

Police say 48-year-old Robert Saylers was in the southbound lane of U.S. 23 in Greenup County late Tuesday night. It happened just south of the Grant Bridge in South Shore.

Police say two cars swerved to avoid hitting Saylers, but Brenda Gammon was not able to avoid the collision.

Saylers was taken to the hospital where was pronounced dead. Police don't know why he was in the middle of the road.

Police say they do not suspect alcohol was a factor and do not plan to file any charges.
