Police: Man tried to lure girl into car on UK campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK Police have stepped up patrols around UK’s campus after they say a man tried to lure a 13-year-old girl into his car.

UK police tell us the 13-year-old girl was walking out of swim practice around 7:45 Wednesday night when a man she didn't know asked her if she would get in his car.

One Lexington mom was picking her daughter up from practice that night when she saw someone in a Honda Accord approach the young girl.

“We thought it was someone she knew and it didn’t look suspicious at the time but when I heard the news on Thursday, I realized that it was a dangerous situation,” the mother said.

Police say the driver asked the girl if she needed a ride home and, even when she declined, he continued asking if she would get into his car.

According to UK Police, the girl said a strange man pulled up to her in his car and said, "You look cold. How about a ride home?"

We’re told the 13-year-old asked the man to immediately leave the area and then reported the incident to her coach.

Despite the close call, the young girl wasn't harmed in the incident.

“I had a talk with my daughter and told her that I did not want her to wait outside. If she walked outside and we weren’t there then she needs to go back inside.”

Police say the man was in a black, older model Honda Accord with dark tinted windows and round taillights.

UK Police say they've increased patrols in this area because of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call them at (859) 257-8573.
