Lexington looks forward to tournament in town despite UK's miss

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) -- Folks in Lexington are trying to put aside the disappointment of UK missing the NCAA tournament, and focus on the basketball games that will be coming to Rupp Arena this week.

Fans say that they're excited that a Kentucky team is in the running, and in a prime position.

"Well, I'm from Kentucky. I'll support any team," said fan Tommy Pasley, who waited in line this morning to get tickets to Thursday's games.

His pick?

"I hope Louisville wins it all -- that's what I hope," he said.

Last year, Kentucky started their run for the national championship in Louisville. This year, Louisville starts their potential run for the title in Lexington. It's something most people are excited about.

"You should be for anybody in Kentucky," said Pasley."Western, Eastern, Morehead, it doesn't matter. I'm very excited. Yeah, I love Louisville."

Although UK isn't in the tournament this year, there is still something Lexingtonians can be excited about.

Renee Jackson, president of the Downtown Lexington Corporation, told us, "I think the last time we had the games was in 2007, so it is always a good nod to get the first round of the NCAA."

Tens of thousands of supporters are expected this week. People said it's a great way for folks to enjoy the beauty of Lexington while positively impacting local businesses.

"We've got an early game, early afternoon on Thursday, and then the early evening game," said Jackson. "So we anticipate places being very busy on Thursday."

If the University of Louisville wins on Thursday, they will play on Saturday in Rupp Arena. If they win that game, they'll move on to the next round in Indianapolis.
