There are still many unanswered questions into a shooting involving an Eastern Kentucky city councilman. Police say the councilman fired back when he says one of the men threatened to rob and kill him.
Magoffin County Sheriff Bob Jordan says police are looking for three people they say are involved in connection with Friday night's attempted robbery of Salyersville City Councilman Ray Nichols.
Sheriff Jordan say three people wearing masks and riding ATV's approached Nichols at a home in the Royalton area of the county. Police say Nichols opened fire after one of the individuals threatened to rob and kill him.
"One of the individuals on the ATV sitting on the lower road, he seen him reached down in the belt area and come out with what occurred to be some type of handgun and so Mr. Nichols worried fearing for his life. He fired off he said somewhere between 7,8, possibly nine rounds," Jordan said.
Jordan says Nichols is okay, just a little shaken.
The Magoffin County sheriff says it is still unclear whether any of the three were hit. Police continue to look for the three suspects.
"But I did go ahead and contacted surrounding hospitals as far as ARH in Morgan County, Highland in Prestonsburg, in Paintsville, even the ambulance service, that if they receive a call about a possibly gunshot wound to immediately contact me," Jordan said.
The sheriff also says he has notified surrounding hospitals and emergency agencies to see if anyone may have been treated for a possible gunshot wound.
