Victim identified in Rockcastle County fire

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - The Rockcastle County coroner was called to the scene of a fire at a home in the Brodhead Community.

Fire crews were called to the home on Chestnut Grove Road around 11pm Friday night. The coroner has identified the victim as 72-year-old Walter Wagers.

Wagers' daughter says she spoke to him just before the fire.

"About 45 minutes later my mom calls me and says there's a bang, within three minutes I got up here and there was a fire," said Tabitha Carpenter.

Kentucky State Police arson investigators were on the scene well into the morning to try to determine the cause of the fire. They say they don't think the fire is suspicious.

Wagers was a preacher for more than 40 years. His daughter says he had lived at the home for about two months.

"One minute I could cry, the next minute I don't want to believe it, I want to wake up," Carpenter said.
