NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Nicholasville police are working to solve a homicide after a driver hit and killed a woman, just feet away from her apartment, and then took off from the scene.

It happened around 8:30 Wednesday night near the intersection of Edgewood Drive and Southview Drive. Police say a woman was walking near the road when a car hit her and then left the scene.

Family members tell WKYT's Whitney Wetzel the victim is 50-year-old Linda Wilhoite. They say she had just left their apartment to run some errands, but she didn't even make it across the street.

Wilhoite's daughter, Katie, says a neighbor knocked on her family's door to tell them what happened. When she walked outside, Katie says she saw her mother on the ground and was hysterical. She says her family won't have peace until the person responsible is found.

"I am one of the victims whose mother has been taken away so suddenly it's painful," says Katie Wilhoite, the victim's daughter. "I want this guy caught, this woman caught, whoever killed my mother I want them caught. I want this whole entire community that we live in to help and pitch in to find this man or woman who killed my mother."

The family's sudden loss has left them unable to pay for funeral costs. They're working on setting up a fund for donations.

Police originally said they believed the suspect was driving a silver car, but now say they're unsure of the color and type of vehicle. They do still believe it likely has damage to the front passenger side.

People who work in the area say Wilhoite walked to several local businesses daily.

"That was Linda, always walking around, always had a smile on her face," said Ellen Rosales. Rosales works at the Jessamine County Public Library. She says Wilhoite visited several times a week.
