Suspicious Package Found At Morehead Post Office

Police and Fire crews spent hours Saturday night at the Morehead post office trying to figure out whether two suspicious packages were dangerous.

Police say a woman discovered the two packages near a mail box just outside the post office. Haz-mat crews were called, who then called in the state's bomb squad.

A robot device picked up the packages and put them into a trailer. They were to later be detonated. Inside, investigators say were harmless tissues. Streets around the post office as well as part of the bypass were closed for nearly four hours.

Turns out the packages contained tissue paper. Looks like when they saw Kleenex on the boxes the mystery would have been solved. So instead of blowing their noses they blew the packages. Blows my mind.

don't post offices have surveillance cameras? can they check to see who left the pkgs?

As I said Anonymous, "The people in Morehead and surrounding area were kept in the dark..." And "Meanwhile the few officials who I spoke with kept a zipped lip...". So if you are saying that those officials whom I spoke with were not the right people to be talking or listening to, then perhaps you are correct. But who else would you ask for an official word?

Packages were confirmed to be Christmas Fruit Cakes that would not fit into the mailbox. After exploding the packages Haz-Mat crew went about cleaning up those gooey fruit thingys that are baked in the cakes. One Haz-Mat member was overcome with gooeyiness and had to be extricated from the sticky predicament by the jaws of life.

Sorry, Nighthawk. Guess you were just not talking or listening to the right people. I was 2.5 hours East of Morehad and I heard from someone 2 hours west of Morehead what was going on.

The people in Morehead and surrounding area were kept in the dark about this incident. Everyone knew that the entire west end of the bypass and parts of West First Street was closed, but none of the locals knew why. I asked several people who live within yards of the post office, and none knew what was going on. Meanwhile the few officials who I spoke with kept a zipped lip about the situation. Even scanner hounds were in the dark as most communications were done by phone or messenger instead of over the radio. I can't understand the effort to keep everyone in the dark over the situation as the only purpose the secrecy served seemed to be to provoke curiosity seekers into trying to get a closer look. If the secrecy was intended to keep people away, then maybe another strategy should be used in the future. The best way to have kept people away from the scene would have been to alert everyone that these seemingly explosive packages had been found. Just my opinion for what it's worth.
