Police investigate death of man shot by deputy

HAWESVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of a man who they say was shot by an off-duty deputy sheriff in western Kentucky.

Police say 43-year-old Harold Powers of Lewisport in Hancock County drove to the home of 50-year-old Hancock County Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Eubanks around 12:30 p.m. CST Wednesday.

Police say Eubanks saw Powers get out of his vehicle with a firearm and that Eubanks confronted Powers on the front porch. Police say Powers then shot at Eubanks with a pistol and that Eubanks, who wasn't injured, returned fire, hitting Powers in the chest.

Powers was taken to Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City, Ind., where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
