LEXINGTON, KY -- A UK graduate from Bowling Green will represent Kentucky in the Miss America pageant. Emily Cox, 22, won the Miss Kentucky 2008 contest in Lexington last night, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader in its Sunday edition.
Ms. Cox performed a piano selection, winning the overall talent contest against 31 other contestants, organizers said. Her platform issue is promoting self-esteem in adolescent girls, reports the Herald-Leader.
Cox won an $8,000 cash scholarship toward her graduate degree at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. She also received her undergraduate degree in biology from UK.
The first runner-up was Miss Heartland, Lindsey Sheckles, 23. The second runner-up was Sarah Billiter, 22, Miss Cumberland Falls, the newspaper reports.
More than $36,000 in cash scholarships were awarded to contestants in addition to numerous prizes and in-kind scholarships to various colleges and universities.
Cox will travel to Las Vegas for the Miss America Pageant, which will be held on Jan. 24, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader.
