BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - A group of Western Kentucky University students designed a balloon packed with scientific gadgets that traveled from south central Kentucky to the edge of space.
The balloon was launched just after noon on July 14 from a field at the Bowling Green-Warren County Regional Airport. It reached a height of about 100,000 feet.
Balloon-1 carried a magnetometer, used to measure the magnetic fields in earth's upper stratosphere and an inertial measurement unit, used in the guidance systems in air and spacecraft.
The project was funded by the combination of public grants and private financing.
