New McConnell ad looks to November

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's campaign has spent more than $100,000 on a new TV ad that will run statewide beginning Tuesday.

McConnell will face Louisville businessman Matt Bevin in the Republican primary on May 20. But McConnell's new ad does not mention Bevin. Instead, it focuses on McConnell's record of protecting Kentucky jobs at a Louisville aluminum plant and the Bluegrass Army Depot in Richmond.

The ad comes less than two weeks after a local newspaper quoted McConnell saying it was not his job to bring employment to a struggling Kentucky county. McConnell has said his comments were taken out of context. But Bevin and likely Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes have repeatedly criticized McConnell for his comments.

The new ad calls McConnell a hero for saving Kentucky jobs.
