LEXINGTON, KY -- The 14-year old victim of a near drowning has died as a result of severe oxygen deprivation and brain damage from her ordeal in a Lexington swimming pool July 20th.
The Fayette County Coroner's Office has identified the deceased as Kiah Milsom of Lexington. She and a "group of teenagers" went swimming in a pool at the Aintree Condos at 421 Redding Rd. about 4 a.m. that Sunday.
Emergency personnel were called in when Milsom did not surface. Her hand apparently had become trapped in a drain. Police and EMS personnel were able to get her unstuck from the drain and she was rushed to the U. K. Medical Center.
The Coroner's Office statement says Milsom apparently had been submerged for 20 minutes prior to being freed. She was resuscitated but, the statement says, "The subject suffered severe anoxic brain injury, which proved to be unsurvivable."
The Coroner's Office says, "Care was withdrawn from the subject and she progressed to death moments later at 1:54 p.m. Friday," (July 25).
The Lexington Division of Police - Crimes Against Children Unit, Detective Hester, investigated the incident. The death has been ruled accident.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Milward Funeral Directors in Lexington.
