Zap cars will be on the way to Kentucky soon. Tuesday morning, Governor Steve Beshear signed an executive order allowing electric cars on Kentucky's roadways.

The Transportation Cabinet must now immediately develop a policy to safely put the cars on the streets.

“Kentuckians, like all Americans, are hard hit by record-high gas prices,” Gov. Beshear said at a news conference announcing the order. “These tough times call for creative solutions, and I believe allowing Kentuckians the option of using an electric vehicle is one of those solutions. Electric vehicles may help ease the burden on the pocketbooks of hard-working Kentucky families, as well as reduce their carbon footprint.”

Recently, the Transportation Cabinet issued a report saying electric cars will be safe on Kentucky's roadways with certain conditions.

“We’re in favor of new and innovative transportation technologies,” Transportation Secretary Joe Prather said. “We will work diligently to develop and implement standards to ensure safe operation of these vehicles on Kentucky roads.”

Secretary Prather will have until December 1st to come up with operating standards for the vehicles.

The company that makes the entirely electric Zap cars is looking into building a plant in Bullitt County. The state's administration says they are continuing to work with manufactures to bring electric car production to the Commonwealth.

Just recently 3400 lbs. vans and suv's involved in traffic accidents (in Lexington)in 35 mph speed zones have flipped over. The occupants were able to walk away. Now imagine these accidents happening with a electric car. The occupants probably would not be able to walk away. The impact safety of electric cars is not there. And I can just imagine what the insurance would cost.

I am all for it......if they make some basic rules for these cars. #1 they must only be allowed on streets and roads where they can absolutely keep up with the flow (speed) of traffic. #2 They must also be only driven by those that hold a valid Drivers License. I don't want this to become a nusience like kids under 16 are on the Mopeds.
