Army Depot Reports Second Mustard Gas Leak

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Officials at a Kentucky Army depot that
houses deadly chemical weapons are confirming the second mustard
gas leak in less than two weeks.

A statement from Blue Grass Army Depot says the new leak showed
only a low concentration of the blister agent and presents no harm to the community or environment.

The leak announced Wednesday was detected in a separate storage igloo from the one where another leak was detected on July 28.

Officials say the hot summer temperatures may be partly to blame for the leaks, which were the first mustard gas leaks in three years.

Mustard is a debilitating agent that produces a breakout of blisters, although it's usually not fatal. The mustard weapons and other more deadly containing sarin are scheduled to be destroyed by 2017 to comply with an international treaty.
