Churchgoers at one Berea church are desperate to find out who stole thousands of dollars from the Sunday morning collection.
Union Church of Christ officials discovered someone had swiped Sunday's offering early Monday morning. The church's pastor, Kent Gilbert, says the estimated eight thousand dollars was supposed to be deposited in the bank --and had been locked up, but when the church treasurer opened the lock box, the money had disappeared.
The pastor says if someone needed the money because of tough times they didn't have to steal it. "It's sad to think that someone would be so desperate as to take something that would have been offered freely if we would have known", says Gilbert.
He says if the thief returns the money, the church will show mercy. He says justice is best left up to God.
