LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Update: 8-1-14
An arraignment date has been set for two Laurel County brothers accused of endangering the welfare of a minor.
Nathan and Austin Wagoner will be back in court on August 11th.
Charles Bolton was headed to the hardware store about 3 p.m. Wednesday when he could hardly believe what he saw in the middle of Keavy Road.
"Oh my goodness, I couldn't believe that child was standing out in the road like that. No bigger than she was," said Bolton.
A toddler half naked, wearing only a shirt, in in the middle of the road, about three miles south of London.
"And it scared her. She was screaming and going on," Bolton said.
The driver behind him called police, who say the 2-year-old child had wandered away from her home, after her mother left her with her boyfriend when she went to work.
"The boyfriend decided he would leave and left the child with his brother who was asleep in the apartment," said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel Co. Sheriff's Office.
Police say the boyfriend is 34-year-old Nathan Wagoner, and his brother is 18-year-old Austin Wagoner. Police say Austin was so soundly asleep, deputies had to literally shake him to wake him.
"The door was left wide open, child went down 13 wooden steps and into the parking lot and the roadway," said Acciardo.
Bolton says he was going about 40 miles per hour when the girl darted out in front of him.
"She was just scared. Didn't know which way to go. Little thing running around in front of that building," said Bolton.
"Really a dangerous location. Unbelievable that this child was not struck," said Acciardo.
Both brothers are in jail, charged with endangering the welfare of a minor.
Social services were called but the child was placed back with the custody of her mother.
