COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A one-time Internal Revenue Service
employee has avoided jail time for poking into the tax records of athletes and celebrities.
A federal judge in Covington sentenced 57-year-old John Snyder on Wednesday to three years probation.
The Kentucky Enquirer quoted Snyder as saying he would "spend
the rest of my life making amends to the people I have hurt."
Snyder is a published baseball and football historian who worked for the IRS starting in 1991. He pleaded guilty last month to looking up the confidential tax information of more than 200 people, including Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Reds players and actors Randy Quaid and Kevin Bacon.
Snyder was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. He could have been
sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay a $250,000 fine.
