WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama prepared to name his running mate, perhaps as early as Friday, from a small field that included at least one dark-horse finalist.
Democratic officials said little-known Texas Rep. Chet Edwards
was one of the few Democrats whose background was checked by
Obama's campaign and he was a finalist for the job.
Among others mentioned: Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Kathleen
Sebelius of Kansas, as well as Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Evan
Bayh of Indiana.
Obama was to disclose the name to the world through a text message that could be sent at any time before a massive rally in Springfield, Ill., on Saturday, where he will present his No. 2 to the nation. The two then will undertake a pre-convention tour of battleground states.
The Illinois senator refused to say who he chose but gave some hints in an interview aired Friday.
"Obviously, the most important question is: Is this person ready to be president?" Obama told "The Early Show" on CBS. Second, he said, was: "Can this person help me govern? Are they going to be an effective partner in creating the kind of economic opportunity here at home and guiding us through some dangerous waters internationally?"
And, he added: "I want somebody who is going to be able to challenge my thinking and not simply be a 'yes person' when it comes to policy-making.
Although it appeared unlikely, Obama's vanquished rival Hillary Rodham Clinton still could emerge as his No. 2, and it was possible that there were other wild card prospects beyond Edwards who could
emerge. Among them: GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who traveled
with Obama to Iraq and Afghanistan; Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry,
the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, or Democratic Sen. Chris
Dodd of Connecticut.
Edwards is a favorite of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who praised
his "extraordinary credentials" on ABC's "This Week" on Aug. 3 and said: "I hope he will be the nominee."
One Democratic official with knowledge of the conversation said
Obama told Pelosi recently that she would be pleased with the choice. Other Democratic officials said he was on the short list. All spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss Obama's selection process.

To Melissa, just a guess, but did you grow up military by any chance? The lack of correct grammar (it would be wife's, not the PLURAL wive's) could be a dead giveaway. (Military life - moving from place to place, low incomes, not alot of schooling, etc....need I continue?) It always humors me that the majority of Republicans can't seem to speak or write properly, and they support people who think they are better than their voters........just something to think about.....

So what if his middle name is Hussein. What's your's? Bubba? Maybe someone with a little ethnic diversity will turn around this country in a way that our so-called leaders have failed to do for 232 years.

It's funny to me that so many people have decided to get political this year. Too bad they haven't educated themselves earlier about the DNC. If so, they would keep in their little confused world. I would be ashamed to care "this time," when you never cared before. I truly believe this race has been made about race only by the democrats and those supporting a dem agenda. The Republicans have ran a clean campaign and have only attacked obama where it counts, his lack of experience, liberal voting record and filp flopping. However, the dems have certainly played the race card this time around. They are only destroying the dem party more than it already is. Divided, the dems Fall.

Biden, was just a pathetic attempt to gain a sympathy vote(talking up his former wive's accident), and a even more pathetic attempt at a military vote,, (my son is a Cpt in the reserves)..lol.. what a joke.. stil nothing to prove these people are capable of being President.."Where in the world is Obama"....umm i think it was Hawaii..

"Quit playing the race card; nobody on the republican side is" ...... this gets the title of most hilarious joke of the day. If only it were funny.... if only it were true. Pubs are counting on the racist vote. I have come to automatically delete any emails from republican acquaintances because they are all filled lies as well as racial and religious persecution. As I delete them I offer up a prayer that the ones who are so easily mislead and quick to forward be healed of their ignorance. And the idiots who go around saying they aren't ready "for blacks who think they can start taking over". Doesn't just make me ashamed of Kentuckians, it makes me ashamed of whites. Find a republican who has a track record of standing against the worst man to ever disgace the Oval Office instread of siding with him for years and then hastily putting out some bull-excrement farce of a campaign commercial and maybe we'll give it a thought. And we're sure not holding our breath while waiting.

Change? Funny from Flip Flop Barack. Maybe he's decided to flip flop on change too? This is a joke of a choice, a Washington insider of two decades , big change. I actually respect Biden somewhat, Obama there is NOTHING to him or about him I like or respect. He is a RADICAL LIBERAL and has NOTHING to do with my beliefs. The message of change would have been easier to believe if say Barack would have ventured for a difference than what he has ran his lying mouth about for over a year now. Get this joke of a ticket out of the news because I am so over Barack. Please VOTE McCain 2008.

Looks like another four years of Bush like management. Everyone should have voted for Hillary!

Posted by: Michael Location: Ky on Aug 25, 2008 at 09:56 AM
To "" I am ashamed to live in KY" Why is someone a racist if they don't vote for Obama? I don't like him because he has not told me what change he is talking about plus the fact he is inexperienced in politics. The fact he is black has nothing at all to do with it. I would have voted for Colin Powell at the drop of a hat. Quit playing the race card; nobody on the Republican side is. Wah Wah Wah...whine like the rest of them.

Kentucky is McCain Country! To the liberals, dream.... ahhhhh, eight MORE years with TRUSTED leadership. Makes you DIMS mad I'd bet. LOL!

There ya go Ashamed to live in Ky. "Your daddy" has given you the typical redneck response. If you don't like it go somewhere else. It would be so silly for you to stay here and be someone who can think expansively and wish more Kentuckians would broaden their own mental capacity. The social and political ignorance here stuns me too. But surely we're wrong, huh? The INTELLIGENT (HA) thing would be to exclude a candidate because his last name sounds a bit like the first name of that terrorist person the Idiot in Chief conveniently forgot about as soon as he duped us into a war with no purpose, right? My preference was actually a Hillary/Biden ticket but you can bet I'll be pulling for Obama/Biden in hope that our nation will be salvaged before it is damaged beyond repair.

It saddens me deeply that this was Sen. Obama's pick. Joe Biden is ANTI-guns, PRO-gun control, ANTI-anything the 2nd amendment as far as I'm concerned. I know I am only one vote, but this year my vote will be against , not for. I will vote Republican for the first time in my life.

Too bad there isn't an event in the Olympics for racism. Some KY native/WKYT post writer would get the gold for sure.

In response to the message left by " I am ashamed to live in KY": If you're so ashamed of this state then why in the freak do you live here. there are 49 other states in america, go pick one and move there. or better yet go to Iraq since you think that it should be a U.S. territory, just as long as you're away from here.

I have heard more about race from the Obama camp than from any shameful southerner. Frankly, we hear little else. No plan, empty promises, and little regard for our country as a whole. Biden will have little to offer when the reporters remember all the quotes he plagiarized when he ran for president in the late 80's. Being liberal, I am sure he will have a free pass with the press as usual. Conservative southerners have more problem with both Obama and Biden's socialist agenda's than with race. The only hope I can believe in with Obama is that he will quit painting himself as victim when he realizes he has been put in his present position by a majority of white people.

It saddens me to see so many closet racists in this state, as well as people who vote based on how their parents voted, how the media tells (aka SCARES) them to, or worse yet, because of the fear their spam email has created in their minds. Yep, that's right people - vote for McCain. Heck, while we are at it, since we will be in Iraq for the next 100 years, why don't we just "adopt" them and add them as a US terrority too? They are already getting more tax money than we are for their schools and people. Not too bad a setup for a country who we invaded only after the President lied to get us there, huh?

Posted by: steve on Aug 22, 2008 at 10:01 PM
YAWN!!!!! another big kook lib he would be at home in Frankfort. Dumas you should put double s in your name and a b because McCain is your man.

I hope that he picks Kathleen Sebelius. She's the only white woman in the group and, as such, would placate the Hillary supporters. If he picks her, he'll get the women's vote and thus win the election.
