A police officer is cut from his mangled cruiser after slamming into a fire truck on Interstate 75.

Richmond Officer Stephen Parker wasn't seriously hurt. Parker was responding to a crash at mile marker 88 just after 10 saturday morning when he crashed into a fire truck, which was also heading to the scene. He did have to be cut out of his vehicle.

Parker was taken to Pattie A. Clay Hospital for observation, but is expected to recover.

Doug hit the nail on the head. Here is a small change in your comment though. RULE #1 One Emergency Vehicle shall never pass another without having radio permission from the other Emergency Vehicle to do so. That is how our SOPs are worded. I never have understood why the cops want to go around the fire trucks and ambulances when going to the scene. Some just want their appearance to be known and to be first. Others just like to drive too fast. Not saying that this cop was or anything like that. Just a general statement.

I can't believe some of this stuff I am reading. I happen to be the wife of officer Parker. He loves his job, and is very devoted to what he does. Things happen and this was an ACCIDENT. I am amazed how people can comment & make accusations about things or people that they obviously dont even KNOW!! For those of you that have posted care & concern, on behalf of our family...THANK YOU. As for the rest, I will keep you in my prayers. That you will not pass judgement on others that you dont even know anything about.

Yes the people who always are negative, are usualy the ones who think the law dont apply to them, so dont worry about it Parker, keep doing the right thing, and let the rest go away

Rule #1. One emergency vehicle never passes another! Glad the cop is okay.

Does not surprise me at all. Parker is a cowboy. Indicted last year by Grand Jury for assaulting captured passenger of eluding vehicle. Dismissed on technicality.

In your perfect little world, what trailer to you live in? Or are you one of those "nice" people that live in the Hines Motel in Richmond? It's people like you that will make derogatory comments about law enforcement but if you need them, they can't get there fast enough. I hope the only ones that respond to any of your needs next time is the foot patrol that is 15 miles from where you are. That job of yours cleaning rooms at the motel is far more dangerous than anything a police officer will encounter!

We were stopped in SB traffic and saw this car before as it was being loaded onto the wrecker... we expected to hear of a fatality and were relieved to hear Officer Parker was not seriously injured. We're not perfect, they're not either. With the area most rural officers are required to cover, they do a great job! Quit whining and try slowing down, get off the phone while driving and they wouldn't have to rush to so many accidents.

Actually I have needed the police before and it took them almost an hour to get to my place which is about 14 miles from the Post. If they had the training that John and Bob says they have you would think that they would drive safer. After all they are the ones that see all the carnage from driving too fast and not following the rules of the road. Maybe they slept through that part of the training.

Its just something that happened. Thank God know one was hurt. Accidents happen to everyone no matter what you do for a living.

Yeah, this is pretty funny. I guess it wouldn't have been as funny if the hit and run driver he was after hit and killed someone in your family. I'd say then you'd be complaining because the cops aren't doing their job. But then again, things are always funnier when you can sit back without a worry, kind of like the monday morning quarterback that no one likes. Nobody's perfect, but at least he did wreck trying to keep the public safe not taking his kids to soccer practice while talking on his cell and reading the paper or trying to get home after a night of drinking at the bar. Melissa, next time you call them to the trailer park, I hope they drive very, very slowly.

Shut up! And ghettochip...get real! Enough said!

first off first responders have to go through several hours of drivers training before they are allowed to opperate emergency vehicles on the road. see thats the problem with people when it comes to public safety personel the public always wants to criticize them until they need them.

So many people believe that firefighters and police officers are people that don't have bad things that happen in their lives too. GUESS WHAT THEY ARE HUMAN TOO AND ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN!!! When are people going to get a grip on that!!! I'm really thankful that everyone was okay. That is really the important thing here. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!!!

As matter of fact police and fire are trained and certified to drive regulary. The conditions that emergency vehicle operaters works can not be under stood unless you have been in the drivers seat of that police or fire truck. The fire department responds to over 1200 emergencies per year and the police to over 8000 emergencies per year. That is a pretty good record!

My experience has shown me that the firefighters are more interested in saving lives, whereas the police are more interested in the action, notoriety, and breaking the laws. I see the police driving much faster than anyone else on the road with no regard to anyone's safety. I put my money on the fault of the police. Glad he wasn't hurt, but maybe he will think twice before slamming on the gas pedal. Isn't the firefighter more equipped to save a life, anyway? i think the EMT's and firefighters should have right of way no matter who is sharing the road.

And they tell us to SLOW DOWN...LOL

Posted by: kay Location: berea on Aug 24, 2008 at 05:25 PM
Goes to show you the guys driving the police cars and the fire trucks are not the best drivers out there either.

Let me go first! No! I'm going first! It seems to me like they were playing King of the Hill not responding to an accident. I wonder who's going to take the responsibility from this blunder? I wish your story had said something about the crash victims. All Police and First Responders need to have additional training on the rules of the road before being turned loose on the innocent motoring public. I agree with SGT Howard.
