LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Animal control officials say a northern Kentucky woman made an expensive mistake when she spent $4,000 to buy a monkey, only to later realize it was illegal to have it as a pet in Kentucky.
Animal control workers say they found the 7-month-old monkey inside a Kenton County home after receiving an anonymous tip.
They say the woman gave up the monkey willingly after being told about the Kentucky law.
On Monday night, animal control brought the monkey to Lexington and gave him to workers of the Primate Rescue Center.
The monkey will now live at the Jessamine County facility.
"We are prepared to offer it a lifetime home for the rest of its natural life," April Truitt, executive director of the Primate Rescue Center, said. "The best part about it is, for the monkey, it will be in the company of other monkeys."
Experts say the monkey should live for about 30 to 35 years.
They say the woman who had him will not be charged because she gave him up willingly.
